This review is from: Ootsuka Pocari Sweat Powder, 13.05-Ounce Units (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
I had run across Pocari Sweat in my many travels to Asia...and in Asian grocery stores in the US, but I never had the desire to try it. I'm glad I finally did, as it is a delicious grapefruit flavored electrolyte replenishing drink. Its easy to make, 1 packet makes 1 liter, and its the best tasting drink after a workout. Highly recommended.

I was used to having bottled Pocari as well, and this is just about perfect. However, I've found that at 1L it is too dilute and lacking sweetness and saltiness compared to the prepackaged version. For me the sweet spot is to add two packages to ~1.8L of hot or boiling water in a fresh, dedicated pitcher (I first tried an old tea-stained one, and it seemed to make it weaker, perhaps because it was encouraging precipitation or settling). I also include a tiny amount of sugar (enough to just cover the bottom) and a pinch of table salt. I have not tried sea salt or salt substitute (potassium chloride) , but I would suspect that KCl would be too salty (I loathe the taste) and that sea salt might impart extra, undesirable flavors and introduce insoluble/less soluble components, leading to inconsistent flavor (if it could be distinguished at all in solution).
Also, this drink is very turbid because of the sugar/flavoring and high level of salts. Turbidity implies suspended solids. While I can't say for certain that settling can occur in the refrigerator over a couple of days, I can say that stirring and swirling are very useful, and stirring when first adding to water (near-boiling seems best, as it produces a more concentrated product. If you use a sports bottle or a container with a strong lid, just try inverting it a couple of times if it tastes weak to see if setting is occuring (packaged bottles may have added chemicals to prevent this, since they must sit on shelves, but I don't know if they do or not). Despite the trickiness and the price, this is definitely my favorite non-cola drink. It has a very smooth taste and finish--light, non-bitter grapefruit with a non-syrupy sweetness and an understated sour/salty "bite" without being noticeably acidic or tasting like saltwater), and the osmolality is such that it's a very different and pleasing experience to ingest (compare a gulp of this to plain cold water and you'll see what I mean). As an added bonus, the high salt content means that the freezing point is slightly lower than that of plain water, so you can get it nice and cold without diluting it with ice. :)

I grew up drinking this in bottle forms in Macau and drink it occasionally when I see them in supermarket. I started cycling and the bottle form is either too big or too small for my bike ride. Then I saw this in Japan and bought a whole bunch, and now finally on Amazon! I would use 1 packet for 2 cycling bottles. Works great!
