1.0 out of 5 stars Vitola trys too hard. Great American novel is not here.
I have read both Quantum and Opalite Moons and feel like I've been sufficiently mooned. I'm always interested in new talent and I applaud it. Vitola appears to be striving for an anthology, having thus far double-mooned us. Dare we speculate that her third offering will have "Moon" in the title? Thanks for the warning. Vitola strains to perfect...

OPALITE MOON -- NOMINATED FOR THE PHILIP K. DICK AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SCIENCE FICTION propels Vitola into the realm of this generation's Arthur C. Clarke! Ty Merrick, a lycnathropic detective, searches for justices by day and answers by night. In the latest of the MOON series, Ty and her outlandishly loveable partner, Andy LaRue, delve into the underworld of the Opalite when they learn that three of the members die during their mystic initiation rites. With her captivating words and intriguing vision of the future, she weaves a story that immediately propels us into Detective Ty Merrick's world -- and she does it soooo well that I can't count the minutes fast enough until her next MOON book comes out! **This is a must read for anyone with a sense of intelligent adventure, a love of good writing, and an eye for the next sci-fi author superstar!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vitola Excells, March 22, 1998

This review is from: Opalite Moon (Paperback)
Just finished reading Opalite Moon and can't wait to start on Manjinn Moon. Ms. Vitola's creation of Ty is complete, a sleuth of uncommon skill. The environment Ms. Vitola has envisioned for our future is possible and she makes you live it. I enjoyed her previous book, Quantum Moon and I feel that the author has grown in her skills with this book to make you believe. You won't be putting the book down until you finish it. Since her series, as it is now apparent, deals with the moon, all I can say is, I look forward to being mooned again. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Author Is an Automatic Buy for Me, December 23, 2000
This review is from: Opalite Moon (Paperback)
I hate this author's dystopian future. I hate the idea of being cold, unwashed and underfed. From my comfortable middleclass couch though I love to travel with her characters through the dreadful underbelly of their society. These are future police procedurals that are as believable as Ed McBain's 87th Precinct and as scary as anything ever written in the dystopian SF genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bang for Your Buck, November 18, 2008
This review is from: OPALITE MOON (Kindle Edition)
In a tight economy where readers like me are more carefully evaluating what they can spend, I have only one comment about this book: Buy it. No kidding, buying Opalite Moon is an investment that will return more bang for your buck than I've ever read. Yes, I'm a fan of Denise Vitola's writing but I'm not a hardcore sci-fi fan so I purchase few. The cover alone made me crawl...to my purse. Buy the book. Read the book. Become hooked like me on Vitola's skills. It's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The second book in the series is just as good as the first - if not better!, November 17, 2008
This review is from: OPALITE MOON (Kindle Edition)
I love Denise Vitola's world building. The world is still in the grips of a dystopian government and its citizens must do what they need to survive. With her descriptive language, I could feel the cold, smell the unwashed, and sympathize with the people. But the story is more than its world building. The story further develops the characters we met in Quantum Moon and introduces us to others. The richness of the descriptions pulls the reader in. The characters and the mystery keeps the reader glued to the chair. I remember the first time I read this (in paperback). I went in to work the next day with no sleep, thrilled the story had kept me up all night and yet sad the third book wasn't out yet. I wanted more!

I highly recommend this series - each book adds more layers to the characters and world. The mysteries are by no means rote - the story line is as complex as Ty, the main character.

Another keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Expertly written, spellbinding story. Read it!, March 20, 1998
This review is from: Opalite Moon (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed Vitola's earlier books (Half-Light, Winter Man, Quantum Moon), but Opalite Moon surpasses them all. Its intricate plot (with steadily building tension), revealed through intriguing characters, kept me reading till the wee hours to find out how it ended. Vitola's unique vision of our world in the future, spiced with numerous metaphysical elements (on which she's obviously done extensive research), hooked me from the very first sentence. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fly me to the Moon!!!, March 20, 1998

This review is from: Opalite Moon (Paperback)
Opalite Moon is science fiction at its absolute best. I saw that this book has been nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award for Outstanding Science Fiction, and after reading it I know why. Vitola's detective in the book, Ty Merrick, is not only a great sleuth that enchanted me throughout the story, but her lycanthrope side also adds a refreshing new dimension to the classic "werewolf". The mystery and magic of the Opalite culture also gave a mystical contrast to the dark future that was the backdrop for the adventure. I kept having a hard time finding a place to put the book down - this was a fantastic read! I'm hoping that Vitola's planning on treating us to more of Ty and her wonderfully unique circle of friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing read!, November 23, 2008
This review is from: OPALITE MOON (Kindle Edition)
Denise Vitola has an amazing way of mixing the fantastic with reality. Her worlds are so complex and so compelling that you can literally feel you are right there with her characters. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone that loves books that mix the natural with the supernatural. It was gripping and I couldn't put it down until the very end.

Denise Vitola is a master storyteller who has created a dark, yet fascinating world for the reader's delight. Opalite Moon's intriguing plot and appealing characters kept me under their spell long after any reasonable bedtime. Vitola's stark, government-controlled future world, with its mysterious metaphysical undertones, would be a scary place to live in; but from the safe distance of a reader's imagination, it is an enticing place to visit.

Again Denise Vitola has taken me down a frightful, yet delightful, path into a world of her own creation. Her writing makes me long to follow her into places I'd never dare go alone.
