Editorial Reviews

[NON-U.S. FORMAT (PAL) Region 2 U.K. Import - This will not play on U.S./Canada DVD players or those from most other countries outside of Europe. You would need a "multi-region" or "region-free" PAL compatible DVD player or computer.] REVIEW: Already old-fashioned when the show was made, Open All Hours now seems like a glimpse into a much earlier world. Ronnie Barker stars as Arkwright, a tight-fisted middle-aged Doncaster shopkeeper, while David Jason as Arkwright's nephew Granville makes deliveries by bicycle in a manner more evocative of the 1930s than the 70s. Barker's relationship with Jason parallels his rapport with Richard Beckinsale in Porridge (1974-8), and while the pair may not be in prison, the confines of the small general dealer's shop often seem like that to Granville. The dry Northern humour centres mostly on money and sex, the latter interest in Arkwright's case being the buxom charms of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, very well played by Lynda Baron. Like writer Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine, the episodes are more amusing character sketches than stories, with the 1973 pilot and first regular episode "Full of Mysterious Promise" serving simply to introduce the players. In "A Mattress on Wheels", Arkwright is tempted to buy a van, and in "A Nice Cosy Little Disease" decides a fake illness will prompt Gladys Emmanuel to provide more than NHS standard TLC. "Beware of the Dog" is Arkwright's response to an attempted burglary, and when his best friend dies he plans a "Well Catered Funeral". Finally, in "Apples and Self Service", paranoia defeats Arkwright's attempts to move with the times. DVD INFO: Picture and sound is exceptional for a 70s sitcom. Extras are a text biography of series writer Roy Clarke, and a complete bonus episode, the 1973 series pilot; its picture quality is not up to that of the series proper, but is perfectly fine for vintage BBC TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open All Hours will keep you up all hours watching it!, May 13, 2008

Open All Hours is classic BBC at it's best. While the series may not carry the broad mainstream appeal [to American audiences]; as say, Monty Python, or Benny Hill; the series features Ronnie Barker; a major UK Legend; and one half of "the two ronnies". (The OTHER Ronnie of course being Ronnie Corbett; from the show "Sorry".)
Open All Hours is wonderful, and it reminds us of a simplier time that predates it's early 70's release. Included on this disc is the original pilot episode which aired three years before the series!
One last thing: you might note that the picture Amazon shows above is for Season TWO; but I ordered it, and received Season One as I hoped.
I highly recommend this hilarious show!

4.0 out of 5 stars My First Intro to Ronnie Barker, April 9, 2011

This review is from: Open All Hours Series One [Region 2 Import- Non USA Format] (DVD)
I had no idea what this show would be when I ordered it. I knew it had David Jason, of whom I am a fan, and I had heard a little bit about Ronnie Barker but never seen his work. Aside from being very dated, I though the writing was very clever and funny. I ordered Season One and Season Two at the same time, and was glad I did. I have watched them repeatedly usually while I am doing something else in the same room. I just hearing the jokes in the background. Very well done.
