5.0 out of 5 stars Ethereal alt-rock for the late night set ., June 20, 2001
This review is from: Open All Night: In the City (Audio CD)
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the co-producer of this album, as well as the liner note writer, so I suppose I am a little biased when it comes any of the three discs in the Open All Night series. This set of tunes was designed to be a soundtrack to the unique rhythm and movement of the city, any big city, at night..

It's intended, as are all the Open All Night series, to be listened to at night... the later the better. Night has long been the time for reflection and contemplation about the day's events, a sort of "state of the union" of the soul. The city, and the night for that matter, are as much a state of mind as they are a physical state. Music can capture that condition in a way that words just can't.

Everyone's experience of night in the city is different; this is just one night in a series of many, a small snapshot of a time and place that you might have been or might yet go. Take a little journey with us into the heart of the city, by way of a couple of people who you'll never meet, and the music that provides the soundtrack for their late night rendezvous.

In my secret heart of hearts, I hope it turns you on to the artists you haven't heard before, because there are some amazing writers and performers on this album. It has been my privilege to have worked with (or for) more than half of them during my time in the music business.

In some ways, this is the sort of a mix tape I might well make for a friend who heard Don Dixon or Morphine over at my house one night and wanted to go a little deeper. At some level, all of the Open All Night albums are. I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did putting them together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for someone who likes eclectic mixed tapes, July 17, 2001

I love to make mixed tapes for friends based around themes and/or moods. This CD is like a great mixed tape.

When I bought it I knew there were people on the CD whose music I'm just not really into, but that doesn't matter because the best thing about a good mixed tape (or CD compilation) is how everything fits together. It's about mood and circumstance, time and place. Can a Barenaked Ladies lullaby follow Under the Milky Way by the Church? Yes!

I definitely recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars midwestern listener, June 25, 2001

I picked up the "On the Road" CD, and found it fabulous - worth buying if only for the liner notes, which were much like conversations I've had with old friends. The track selections themselves were a compliment to the mood set by the liner notes, rather than the other way around, it seemed to me. And they were wonderful selections. I picked up this CD shortly thereafter, and was not disappointed. This is the perfect CD for night owls like me. And the perfect mood music for driving, for sitting up late, and contemplating life as it should be.
