A Must Own,
By Kevin Monahan (Orange Park, FL USA) - See all my reviews

Yeah, I found out about the Nighthawks in the mid 70's as well. I guess this one in particular made such an impression that I plunged headlong into collecting blues music. Today this recording remains my favorite blues cd along with the first release by Roomful of Blues. I don't write many recommendations, so if you are on the fence, and looking for a hidden gem, grab this one.

These guys are boiling hot!,

I've been into the Nighthawks since the early '70's while living in Washington, D.C. I used to catch them at the Bayou and Cellar Door in Georgetown, and Phychedelly in Bethesda, MD. They're the best blues band there is and this CD is evidence of that. Hey, Mark and Jimmy, I'm still your biggest fan! I've had this album since way back when and now with no record player (remember those?) I am delighted the CD is available to replace my record. No, I'm not getting rid of the ol' vinyl copy. It'll be a collector's item someday!

Got me into the blues,

They came to play at my college in Chicago in 1979, and blew everyone away. This album was out at the time and became a must have for all in attendance that night. Jimmy T. and Jan lay down some amazing tracks. Not one weak spot at all. These guys were broadly respected by all of those in blues at the time, and played with many of them. This CD is their best work. I became a life-long fan of the blues that night. Also agree that the first Roomful of Blues is a must have.

An old friend and I stumbled into The Rome Inn in Austin, TX one night in 1977, looking to play some pool, knowing nothing about the band that was performing. The Nighthawks changed my life that night, if instantly and forever becoming a lover of Blues music can be called life-altering. This album is for me their best -- pure blues (with Pinetop Perkins lending a hand) and unadulterated (none of the relatively weak rockabilly heard on some other albums).

Although the album is from 1985 it still rocks even in todays market. From the opening song, 9 below zero, you will find these classic re-makes outstanding. From serious blues lover to beginner, this album is timeless.
