Book Description

January 1, 1999 0938865773 978-0938865773

This book contains 20 themes that relate directly to literature, social studies, science, math, art, and music curriculum. Each theme recommends activities and books for further study. 14 focus picture books include summaries of books and ideas and suggestions for cross-curriculum activities. 25 author studies give biographic information on well-known picture book authors and illustrators, as well as overviews of their work and summaries of their books.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Integrating literature into the curriculum is a hot educational strategy today. Hurst's book makes that task tremendously easy with this collection of picture-book suggestions. In her "Themes" section, she identifies common topics such as "Desert," "Mammals," "Weather," "Families," and "Towns & Cities." Each one features a summary of a picture book, brief descriptions of suggested activities, and an annotated list of related fiction and nonfiction titles. The "Focus Books" in the second section "represent several genres and were chosen because they are outstanding works of art." Detailed descriptions of the books and illustrations are provided. Again, activities are suggested and related books are listed. The final section focuses on 25 children's authors/illustrators with brief biographies, annotated lists of their books, and accompanying activities for each. School librarians will welcome this resource.-Jessica Foster, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA
