Editorial Reviews

Review

"Reminiscent of Anne Lamott's artful sharing of random moments from her life experiences, Christine Organ in Open Boxes, does Lamott one step better. Organ suggests universally relevant meanings behind these outwardly ordinary, yet spirit-filled happenings. Gifted in the use of delightful analogies, Organ transforms even the messiest moments of everyday life into windows opening outward toward grace, wonder and miracles...We need more voices like this..."
-- Margaret Placentra Johnston, award winning author of Faith Beyond Belief: Stories of Good People Who Left Their Church Behind

"Christine Organ not only talks about faith and spirituality, she lives it, digging into each experience with a contagious curiosity and passion...As you turn the last page of this book, you'll be inspired to step out of your own box, unpack your baggage and weave your own story of sacred connection with the gossamer threads of grace, wonder and everyday miracles."
--Michelle DeRusha, author of Spiritual Misfit: A Memoir of Uneasy Faith

In a world where connections are instant (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), Christine points out how easy it is to move through life without a true meaningful connection unless we pause every now and then, let ourselves marvel and wonder at what we see around us, and notice miracles that happen each & every day. Not the thunder in the sky, burning bush kind, but the kind where a stranger extends a hand or a kind word. She points out that the beauty of life is easily taken for granted in this world of immediate gratification where we play the "Comparison Game" (her words) and find ourselves lacking when we allow ourselves to feel that we must "have it all," despite knowing that we simply cannot have it all...so we take the wonder and miracles bestowed on us with grace, transporting us to a place where we can accept ourselves and others, despite our differences.

Christine's "boxes" are similar to the closets where people have hidden away their real selves, before changes in our culture make it acceptable to step out of the closet. Hiding inside boxes or closets cheats the world of the beautiful rainbow of diversity in our world. When we speak with our authentic voice, when we lift the lid off our boxes or open those doors, we find others to connect to. We find that there's a place where we belong...despite not having all the answers...despite our faults...despite a lot of mysteries.

I found so much to connect to in this book of a personal nature. Thank you, Christine, for sharing your stories...which are ultimately the stories of multitudes of others out there, just waiting to lift the lid off their box, and open their minds and hearts.

I was thrilled to recently have the chance to read and review the book Open Boxes by Christine Organ.

Christine is a Mom of two who writes about faith, love, and the human condition.

Before reviewing Open Boxes I was given the following description of the book:

"Open Boxes is a collection of stories that doesn't just tell readers – but shows readers – how to live fully and connect deeply by reveling in the sacred within our everyday lives."

I was very intrigued and looking forward to a light, chicken-soupy type read.

In one sense, I got exactly what I was looking for, but this book was so much more than that!

Because it is a collection of short stories, it's perfect bedtime reading material. However, as you read, you get to know and love Christine, and want to know more. I loved the way she told her story in pieces and that it wasn't just a memoir but a series of lessons learned along the way.

When I began reading and got to the first chapter called Divine Kindness in an Old Navy Parking Lot (and yes, all of the chapter's titles are this amazing!), I knew I wouldn't be putting Open Boxes down any time soon.

Open Boxes is divided into sections which direct the reader's attention to grace, miracles and wonder; and she shares snippets of her life, which illustrate the themes. Most of these vignettes made me feel a connection to her, and I appreciated how much we have in common.

She's so down-to-earth, I imagine a lot of people who read her book discover this feeling of shared humanity. And her overtures in connection and vulnerability are the perfect backdrop to the theme of "open boxes." We are not to compartmentalise our own lives, and we shouldn't close off from others who don't seem at first glance to be like us. This is one of those books that I will read over and over again throughout my life. It really resonated with me. It asks the reader to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, and it does so with perfectly interwoven thoughts, stories, quotes and musings. This book made me reflect, smile, cry.....but mostly, it taught me something very purposeful that I can sincerely say has changed the way I now view what heretofore seemed mundane and trivial. It encouraged me to find the beauty and grace in unexpected things and places, and to see that even in the little things that we so often do without giving a second thought to, the autopilot moments, are full of wonder. With each page,I felt more connected, centered and grateful for each day and each experience. This book gave me peace and joy. It softly asked me to live fully in the present.....but the most important message for me personally, was the suggestion that there is grace everywhere, everyday, and in everything. I believe that now.

Christine is honest and brave in her writing. She tells stories of love, of parenting, and of the everyday. She tells stories of joy and stories that cast a spotlight on the hardest parts of life - the parts that a lot of us only whisper about under the covers in those quiet and secret moments before sleep. The result of this is the sense that she understands deeply what it means to live - really live - in her days, and how to connect deeply with all the parts of herself and of her world, the good, the bad and all the parts in between. Her optimism is contagious and her words are inspiring.

It is evident on every page that Christine has found the grace in her moments. That she has her eyes wide open to the absolute miracle it is to wake up in the morning every day and to be alive.

And because her eyes are wide open, she makes it easier for us to open our eyes as well.
