THE PHENOMENON

Over a decade after his death, vindication has come to Fela Kuti, Africa’s musical genius. AfroBeat, his gift to the world, is now an international staple on his own uncompromising terms, social content intact.

Throughout his life, Fela contended that AfroBeat was a modern form of danceable, African classical music with an urgent message for the planet’s ... Read more in Amazon's Fela Kuti Store

Editorial Reviews

Another long-thought-lost gem from the Fela Anikulapo Kuti archives, Open & Close was originally released in 1971 and is a total groove-fest loaded to the gills with raucous horn blowing, ferocious percussion (once again, Tony Allen take a bow), and song lengths over ten minutes. The four (lengthy, as usual) songs occupying Afrodisiac had been originally recorded in Nigeria as 45 rpm releases. Afrodisiac consists of re-recordings of these, done in London in the early 1970's.

Absolutely mandatory listening for all musicians and lovers of funk. Grooves that don't relent for a second, horns that season and pepper, punctuating percussion, call and response vocalizing, blistering horns and incomparable drumming by Tony Allen make this gem a timeless classic. Think the 'Sargeant Pepper's' of Afrobeat. Yeah, it's that good. Along with 'Confusion/Gentlemen', 'London Scene/Shakara' and 'Inside Out', these recordings represent the cream of the crop by Fela. And speaking of Cream, get the LP with Ginger Baker as well... if 'Afrodisiac' doesn't get you hard, Viagra won't help either, it's time to call the coroner.

I liked 1 of 3 tunes on Open & Close. Liked all tunes on Afrodisiac, but sound quality poor on both. I think that both LPs were originally recorded by EMI &/or EMI Nigeria, so I guess that the sound was pretty good. Knitting Factory Records' compilation is disappointing.

Favorite tracks include "Je'nwi Temi (Don't Gag Me,) which features an intense array of sound that simmers down at the perfect moment only to build up to a frenzied, horn-induced climax. This song was also featured in the film The Visitor. "Swegbe and Pako," although a slower groove, will have you jamming all the same.

If you've never been introduced to Kuti's music before, immediately upon first listen you'll recognize his sound as something you can groove to, whether he speeds it up or slows it down. (Think Santana meets the soundtrack to Boogie Nights; cheesy 80s rock not included.)

Fela - what more can you say? The man who was the James Brown of Africa? Or maybe James Brown combined with Miles Davis? As political as Bob Marley...There's something incredibly organic when the funk is generated from the motherland - and this Afro Funk at it's best!
