It's All Killer - No Filler Here...,
By
This review is from: Open & Close / Afrodisiac (Audio CD)
Absolutely mandatory listening for all musicians and lovers of funk. Grooves that don't relent for a second, horns that season and pepper, punctuating percussion, call and response vocalizing, blistering horns and incomparable drumming by Tony Allen make this gem a timeless classic. Think the 'Sargeant Pepper's' of Afrobeat. Yeah, it's that good. Along with 'Confusion/Gentlemen', 'London Scene/Shakara' and 'Inside Out', these recordings represent the cream of the crop by Fela. And speaking of Cream, get the LP with Ginger Baker as well... if 'Afrodisiac' doesn't get you hard, Viagra won't help either, it's time to call the coroner.

VIVIACIOUS HORNS, INTOXICATING BEATS, FEEL-GOOD LYRICS,
By Lucy Tonic "Lucy Tonic" (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews

Favorite tracks include "Je'nwi Temi (Don't Gag Me,) which features an intense array of sound that simmers down at the perfect moment only to build up to a frenzied, horn-induced climax. This song was also featured in the film The Visitor. "Swegbe and Pako," although a slower groove, will have you jamming all the same.
If you've never been introduced to Kuti's music before, immediately upon first listen you'll recognize his sound as something you can groove to, whether he speeds it up or slows it down. (Think Santana meets the soundtrack to Boogie Nights; cheesy 80s rock not included.) FOR MORE OF THIS REVIEW CLICK HERE [...] |
