Good Little Camping Aide,
This review is from: Open Country 5-Cup Percolator (Sports)
We bought this for a quick weekend trip. It's very handy and delivers in terms of durability over an open flame. It's a bit messy in terms of spurting water during the brewing process, so I wouldn't recommend it for the stove. All around - worth the $10.

Good pot for coffee or water...,

This is a very good aluminum pot, which I mostly use just for heating water. It works okay for brewing coffee. The handles are strong (a bit stiff at first), and the lid fits snugly.

Took it camping for a few days. Worked well for something that will only get used once in a while. Heats up quickly, to include the handles. They are extremely hot by the time the coffee is ready. One great thing is that the pot keeps the coffee hot for a long time after you take it off the heat. We are satisfied with the purpose.

Pretty cool. It's fairly sturdy and it made as decent a cup of coffee as you can get from a percolator.
But just in case anyone doesn't know this already, a "wire handle that folds in for compact storage" does not stay "cool to the touch" when those handles are connected to an aluminum container holding boiling water. Aluminum and wire has a tendency to transfer heat.

Love the pot, but hate the leak...,

I have purchased this pot two times as of this date. I had to return the first one due to a small constant drip that leaked from the handle rivets. The leak was constant in that it leaked whether the pot was hot or cold. Besides being annoying, it created a bit of a mess while the pot was heating on the stove. Figuring I had bought a defective unit, I returned the leaky pot and bought a replacement pot. Unfortunately, the new pot leaks slowly from the pot's same handle rivet area. With this replacement pot, the leak only occurs when the pot is hot from heating on the stove (metal expansion?). Obviously, Open Country has some quality control issues with leaks originating from the pot's handle rivets. The handle needs to be redesigned so that leaks will not occur. I love the pot and its size, however, a pot holding hot liquids should NEVER leak... period!!!

First off, I am a totally satisfied Amazon customer and their return policy is great. This item though needs to be displayed differently. They state it is "6 1/2 inches by 5 1/4 inches by 5 inches". Our old pot that fits into a special gimbaled little stove on our boat finally gave it up. These dimensions were perfect IF it were 6 1/2 inches high by 5 1/4 inches wide. I was confused by the other 5 inch figure so called Amazon and spoke to a representative. He also thought that the dimensions were 6 1/2 inches high by 5 1/4 inches wide and also thought that the 5 inches was the diameter of the lid. So we were very happy to be replacing our beloved pot. The dinky little thing that arrived today is 5 iches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide (or diameter) AND you could never put 5 cups in it unless you were using a very small tea cup (maybe). Perhaps they meant to the top of the percolator plastic piece?? But as mentioned, even Amazon's own representative agreed with my assumption. Amazon needs to be more specific about the dimensions of this product....Height, width....height if it includes the percolator. Just a thought. If you want a regular 5 cup pot, this isn't the one for you either unless you are using gram-mas China tea cup. Thanks though for the prompt refund and paying for return shipping. We sure wish it would have been a fit. Patty

Good coffee, and made in the USA,

I bought this at another retailer today for more money than on Amazon. I am always very pleased to see the "Made in the USA" label on packaging. MSR stoves are also made in the USA, and yes, it matters. It matters if would rather see people work, than "occupy"This percolator is light, well made, and works very well. I personally prefer the taste of this coffee over my single person french press, which always leaves grinds in my cup of coffee, and frankly, doesn't taste that great at any rate. The french press gives me the caffeine I need to get going while camping, but it tastes rather watery. I understand some people love the french press, but I am not one of them, and percolated coffee, was good enough for my dad, and it is good enough for me. I like it just fine. I bought this for camping, but may use this in my kitchen regularly instead of my 4 cup expresso pot, that I use to make a one person cup of standard coffee. I have been on a mission to get away from using high temp plastics in my cooking for years. I don't completely get away from high temp plastics with this(the bulb is high temp plastic), but it is probably 98% aluminum. The expresso pot does make tastier coffee, but this percolator coffee is just fine in my book for everyday kitchen use, and is more practical than my small expresso pot, as it makes a good 3 big cups of coffee. Yes, it is a "5 cup", but remember, a cup is supposed to be only 8 oz, and most of our mugs are at least 12 oz. It will also save me time, and hassle in the field, as you put the water in, the coffee in, and let it sit over the fire. Where as with my single serving french press, I have to boil water in a SEPARATE CONTAINER, the pour it in, and wait. Not many more steps, but it is slightly more of a hassle, to use two different containers. When I am camping, I want to get on the trail, or started with my day as soon as possible, and use as little energy doing it as possible. Updates: 1. I started taking the standard coffee filters and punching a hole in the center to put the grounds in. Not to keep the grounds out of the coffee, but to filter out the supposed, coffee oils that are said to raise your "bad" cholesterol. 2. The coffee I just made is every bit as rich as the expresso coffee I make. I used more coffee this time. 3. When I first got the pot, it leaked very little around the bottom rivet that holds the handle on, but it has since stopped leaking completely. Mark :)

I purchased this small coffee pot for emergency situations to heat water for tea and water for emergency rations. It's a well-made coffee pot with a plastic indicator at the top to tell when the perking is done. Glass would easily break. So, if you need a great little coffee pot for emergencies or for camping, this is the greatest! And the price is wow.

Disappointed,

I was disappointed in this item. It is more like a camping kettle than something you use at home. Guess I should have taken more notice of the title. Anyway, it has been sent to the RV and I got a better one from Kmart for hubby to use in the house.
