Editorial Reviews

'Open Fire', originally released in 1985, is was the band's first live album. This album mixes great hard rocking', foot stomping' anthems with great melodies, Dave Meniketti's powerful voice belting out the lyrics like his life depended on it. Majestic Rock. 2005.

I thought this album would never make it to CD, but I received it today and I'm very happy with it! I had the cassette version of Open Fire years ago and that tape unfortunately died a long time ago. I remembered the quality of the sound and performance of all of the live songs on this album so well that I could instantly tell them apart from other later live releases - and I was always disappointed in those releases because this album was so good. This new CD was all I hoped it would be: To my ear it sounds great! The mastering has great Y&T punch to it but isn't overblown dynamically, and it's a remarkably clear recording considering it was originally made over 20 years ago. It's not perfect, but it's very good. If you're a fan of Y&T and especially of this album, definitely go for it!

I have "Open Fire" on cassette. The CD release last year thrilled me no end, as this is probably one of my favorite live albums. The title track opens the action, and tracks like "Go For The Throat," "25 Hours A Day" and "Rescue Me" keep the excitement mounting.

"Barroom Boogie" is a great track. The studio recording was good, but I love it live. Adding "Black Tiger" to the CD is a great choice.

I can't see how anyone -- especially any Y&T junkie -- would be disappointed with this. Five stars. No question.

An up and coming HM/Hard Rock often uses a live record to propel them into the stratosphere and in most cases, especially in the `70's; that seemed to be the ticket. By the middle of the `80's, California's Y&T, a veteran of the small clubs and support status slots for about a decade, decided the time was right to release their own primary source document in the hopes of striking the same gold. `Open Fire' had some of the tools and a hit single to boot but it was not the monster success the band or more importantly the record label hoped it would be. "Summertime Girls" was the lone studio cut and got tremendous radio and MTV airplay but it was kind of sad that Y&T had to write and record such an overtly commercial song. "Go for the Throat" was another new song, live for the record but again, couldn't there have been another choice? No "Mean Streak", "Black Tiger", "Dirty Girl" or "Hurricane" here which would have been unreal in a live setting. Yes "Open Fire" and "Rescue Me" are present and they do compensate but I guess that's the downside of having only eight tracks (with two new songs to boot!). `Open Fire' just seems like a missed opportunity to me and I would tell most prospective Y&T fans to buy one of the compilations or buy the first three A&M records and leave `Open Fire' for last if so inclined. Unfortunately there would be no continued upward progression and by the end of the decade the band would be an afterthought...but at least they had a hit.....yeeesh!

Excellent live reproduction quality. This CD has the finest version of "I believe in you" ever played. The guitar work is fantastic.

And YES, it even rivals Maiden's "Live After Death"!

This live album captures Y&T at their absolute best... the energy just can't be topped. For years it wasn't available on CD, so for years I attempted to search peer to peer networks in hopes that someone would have converted their LP or tape to mp3, only to come up empty. So when this was FINALLY released, they could have been charging FIFTY bucks for it and I would still have bought it. It's that good. Simply put, if you are a Y&T fan or even just a fan of 80's metal, you need to buy this CD!
