I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the trailer, and was disappointed that this movie didn't release in theaters in my area, but was well worth watching online regardless. At first glace, may seem like a rollercoaster of mismatched characters, seeking explanation to who they are and where they are, and why, but intrigue takes over as they begin to recollect their pasts, and madness takes over. They find they are not alone, and are not who they think they are, nor are their circumstances as seemingly simple. There is a more sinister plan at work, but one which they do not quickly figure out until it becomes all too clear that it is not mere madness taking over, but madness that is coming to get them and they must work together, with frenzied memories of what brought them together, all too slowly coming back to them, but will they remember in time to stave off the impending mystery of what is to happen on the 18th? Very enjoyable and suspenseful

It was a smart twist on what would have otherwise been a tired premise. My gf made me watch it because Joseph Morgan is in it. He and Sharlto Copley did a good job pulling me into the story though and the movie was pleasingly dark for a horror fan like myself. 4 stars because it did get a little slow at times and it wasn't the most gratuitous with the violence, but it WAS just f&%$ed up enough for me to like it.

DON'T WATCH THE TRAILER!!! We watched it afterwards and it really gives a lot away.

I really liked this film. I've adored Sharlto since District 9 so I rented as soon as it was available. There are some twists and it had a nice ending that tied everything up like the previous review said. Actually liked this more than World War Z. It didn't rely on effects but it was more gritty and down to earth horror which focused on location (the pit, shacks hidden in the woods, secret labs in the basement) which helped the story because being lost in the woods is bad enough, but to have no memory and no one knows if they trust each other. Not to mention the 'creatures/people' living in the woods! It give it a realistic approach to terror. I'm actually sick of gory movies bring back more films with a story and suspense like in the days of John Carpenter's Halloween and Jaws.

Open Grave is a pretty good movie. The 3 stars is given because the plot tends to drag for a while in many areas, relying on an atmosphere that's just creepy enough to get the job done but never blowing me away and leaving me wanting more. The story isn't entirely based around people stuck in a grave trying to climb out but rather, supposed to be based around people occasionally stuck in a deep hole and a mysterious person from above throws a rope down allowing them to climb up. This is a theme that happens on more than one occasion, but the problem is that for a good chunk of the movie, we're treated to only a few actual scary moments.

Once a confused and disoriented man in the beginning of the story played by Sharlto Copley is free he stumbles inside a house where others are staying. Turns out everyone else in the house had the same fate- they had to escape an open grave. Nobody knows what's going on and who's the enemy. This movie surely has a few really solid parts. Constantly questioning who's loyal and who's not is a common occurrence amongst the group and a high point of the story, as is the segment with the crazy man stuck in barbed wire out in a field who begs to be free, only to secretly be psychotic and lure an unsuspecting man towards him and kill. I guess his scream for help actually meant "Help! I'm sick in the head!" and not "Help! I'm stuck in barbed wire!"

I *want* to say that I liked the scene where Sharlto Copley and Erin Richards characters find themselves outside screaming towards a group of men cutting wood in a field only to suddenly realize those men are the monsters so Sharlto and Erin quickly run up the hill to their vehicle, but for some reason after a typical clichéd "my car won't start!

Open Grave had a lot of suspense and kept you guessing. Great acting and original for the genre. It is worth the money.

Surprisingly good movie considering the bad reviews and rating. It's not your stereotypical zombie movie and focuses more on the characters self discovery more then anything. As in, they all wake up with amnesia at the beginning and spend the whole movie trying to figure what the heck is going on. This movie is def not for everyone...not even those who usually enjoy zombie flicks.

I give it 3.5 stars. I'm not sure why this movie has such horrible reviews on rotten tomatoes. I think maybe because it skirts the line between genres so people go in expecting a certain kind of movie and are disappointed when they don't get it. It's seems billed as a zombie/horror flick but there's not much zombie/horror in it. I'd call it more of a mystery/suspense movie that just happens to have zombies in it. I usually wouldn't go for a zombie movie (since I've seen so many before and it gets old), but I love me some Sharlto Copley so I thought I'd give it a try. The first half especially is slow for a "horror" movie, but then bit by bit the story gets revealed. I won't tell the details and spoil it for anyone. I thought it was quite interesting and a different take on the zombie genre. If you're looking for tons of fighting and gore, then this isn't for you. But if you don't mind a (dare I say it?) thoughtful movie that happens to have some goriness and zombies, and can stick through a movie that takes time to reveal itself, then you might like this.

A few extraneous notes: Yes, the characters act like typical stereotypical horror movie characters in the beginning. Initially that annoyed me, but in the end it didn't bother me since they actually grew as characters. Another review complained about Sharlto Copley's Kenny Loggins beard and bad accent. I don't mind the beard, but I wish he could've just gone with his native South African accent. It really wouldn't have made any difference to the plot, especially considering that there's a German(?) guy and a Chinese woman too. (I think his accent was better in Europa Report - the SA always comes through when he's yelling and he yells a lot in this.) Anyway, not a deal killer!
