I purchased the barrel to store water for an emergency or to use as a rain barrel. I like the open lid. It means I can scrub the inside of the barrel and lift water out of the barrel with buckets instead of a pump. The barrel comes with a plastic lid, two threaded plugs in the lid, one larger, one smaller, and a metal clamp that secures the lid to the barrel. The lid has a soft seal that mates with the barrel rim. I haven't filled the barrel with water and clamped the lid to determine if it leaks. The barrel is made out of heavy plastic, though maybe not that heavy for a 55 gal barrel.

The barrel was made by Dixie Poly in SC. I looked on their website and they advertise the barrel as being suitable for food, though the barrel isn't marked as such. It's their economical 55 gal barrel. My barrel smells as another reviewer commented. I'm still airing it out. I'll probably try to wash out some of the smell too.

I'm going to order another.

I ordered this for my 10-year old son (yes he desperately wanted a 55-gallon plastic drum for Christmas; what can I say, he is a unique little fellow!). Barrel was shipped in shrink-wrap, which protected it for the most part, but the side was slightly scraped and there was a small chip of paint out of the cover ring. These were no big deal considering it's an industrial barrel. I wouldn't mention this normally except that it was intended as a gift. Well made, and price was good (no free shipping and not Amazon Prime eligible, so I can't give it 5 stars). Be sure to open it outside and let it air out a few hours, as it gives off a strong chemical odor at first. Good product.

I purchased this barrel because I needed one a removable top. The barrel is new. Not a previously used one. The barrel was shipped the day after I ordered it. It arrived packed in a box. Not much to say about the barrel other than it was clean and ready to use. I think it was a good price for a barrel with removable top. I would definitely buy again.

for people with on- again off- again wells, this is very nice. slight odor, but airing out overnight fixed that. it only needed a quick hand wash and i have an emergency supply of water. for a change, fed-ex even delivered it properly.

They need a [C] photo. If you go to the C&H website directly you will see that they sell a 55 gal drum that has no picture for this price, and the [B] drum is more expensive. I now have some of both as I purchased this one to see what it was like and got a [C]. I wondered why the price was less on Amazon than on C&H for the pictured drum.

Given that - the [C] drum seems great. I only own 1 at the moment so it does not look like they will stack like the [B] drums can (I'm going to get more, I'll update when I find out), They have a seamed and flared out bottom, so more stable sitting on the floor than the [B] drums, maybe a tiny bit less strength at the seam, but poly welds great.
