The Longcut's 2006 album Call and Response is terrific: energetic, fun, new and familiar at the same time. There are no "skip this one" songs on it. Open Hearts seems just the opposite. With the exception of the title track, which is lovely, the album seems to veer away from rock to a more repeptitive dance/rave style, throwing way too much emphasis on the weak vocals. I'm thinking this guy must have no idea how bad his singing is, or he would never inflict it on us. The best I can come to describing it, is a kind of tone-deaf howling that makes every song sound the same. It's a shame, because I really loved their first album.
