Book Description

There's a tradition at Mercy Regional Hospital that the nurses take very seriously. The window blinds are always kept closed for a patient with a good prognosis. But for a patient who’s not expected to make it, the blinds are left open so the soul can be set free when the time comes. Hope Wyatt, single mother, aspiring poet and new-to-practice nurse makes the mistake of closing the blinds on a terminally ill patient her first day on the job. Her colleagues quickly let her know what a tremendous foul-up she has made, and aren’t in any rush to let her forget about it. When Hope’s friend Will ends up in the ICU in a coma, she isn’t sure if she should leave the blinds open or closed for him. Already struggling with the hard hand that life has dealt her, Hope tries her best to hold it all together and find some peace in the turmoil around her. Inspired by Saul, the husband of a cancer patient, and Marjorie, a fellow nurse on her unit, Hope adopts a new philosophy about coping with the emotional highs and lows of caregiving. One that gives her the strength to boldly defy the tradition of the blinds, and do what she knows in her heart is right.

5.0 out of 5 stars I now know the secret of "Open" December 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I could instantly relate to the heroine, Hope. I too was once a single mother with young children and had to start over again in life, find a job and take care of my family. I know how hard it was and I felt for Hope, especially after seeing all of the loss that she endured in her young life. It was sweet and exciting to see the hint of romance with her friend Will, and I shared her joy as she started her first day at work. But when Will ended up a patient in her hospital, and some of the nurses she was working with weren't exactly supportive of her as she was learning the ropes, I really hoped things would turn around for her quickly! It took some time, and some friends, to help Hope understand the secret of staying "Open." I don't want to spoil the ending, but I will say that it was satisfying... a nice warm and fuzzy read for the holidays. Hope will leave you confident at the end that everything is going to be okay in her world - and yours too, if you stay "open" to all that life throws at you!

4.0 out of 5 stars An open and shut case for a good, quick read. February 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book in the free books category and decided to read it as a quick short, and I am certainly glad I did. The authors did a great job of writing this tale, the premise of which concerns following your heart regardless of what others may think or say.

Well written and nicely edited, this story is a great read for when time is short and you need something a little uplifting; you know...a story that makes you smile. Follow your heart and give this one a try, and for a bit of extra about the authors at the end of the book.

Solid 4 1/2 star read.

Romanticized, yes. Human, totally. This tale would give you the empathy needed to understand the suffering of terminal patients and the every day life of a new nurse..

4.0 out of 5 stars SHORT BUT SWEET LITTLE STORY February 20, 2015
By Carol U
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mr. Marcus, is a new author for me and although this edition was less than twenty pages I throughly enjoyed how Hope was able to make the right decisions for a promising future. Embracing her new career in the nursing profession and raising her young son by herself. I could see more written about Hope. Looking forward to reading more from this author. I truly love any story with the medical field as it backdrop. Thank you making this free and the opportunity to read this ebook. (less)

4.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Story June 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Marcus Engel has written an inspiring story. The day to day job of a nurse can become very tiresome and grow old quickly. Hope, the nurse, in this story takes it upon herself to "feel" what the patient needs and wants and acts on it. Bravo!
Not all hospital employees can empathize with their patients and happy is the patient who has a kind and compassionate nurse.
Very good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alright book
I wish the book was longer and had some more substance but overall it was an interesting book to read. I just feel it was rushed and could have had more development.

The book will leave you wanting more but it ends too abruptly and in some parts they are too vague. Really wanted more to the story of the main character being a brand new nurse... Read more
