A lot of people get on these guys for sounding similar to early WHO with the vocals in some songs reminding one of Daltry, like in "I Feel The Same Way Too", "My Mind Cries" & "Thor The Thunder God", but there are a lot of great ideas and melodies scattered throughout the album. "Scattered" being an appropriate word. There will be a truly great part and then they go into something that does not really fit leaving you wondering, why did they go there? I really enjoy this album though and have listened to it numerous times. The distinct vocals and two part harmonies are very good. Classic guitar tone with some great overdrive giving it a unique sound similar to fuzz, although the guitarist's leads leave much to be desired as the solos are simplistic. "Dear Louise" is a catchy number with a driving drum beat/bass part and nice rocking guitar riffs. "I Feel The Same Way Too" in my opinion is the best song on the original album and is an excellent example of British psychedelia with some great riffs as well. "Magic Potion" is a great tune that took me by surprise. It is quite heavy for the time, possibly and sonically being one of the first "heavy metal" songs, before the term was even conceived as a style of music, complete with double bass and distorted power chords that was more prominent in the 70's. The sound production and playing is tight and the sound quality on this reissue is excellent. Rare as hens teeth, original 69' UK pressings on Philips go for $1000+ depending on condition. I saw a near mint copy fetch around $1500. All in all it's a good album, it's just a little inconsistent in the song writing department, but it rocks!! Through Time & Space Thor's Hammer Flies......

Originally released in 1969, as this was the South London psychedelic band's sole recording. I first heard a cut by them on the 'Nuggets 2' 4-CD box set. I was then motivated to purchase this disc. Needless to say, I'm glad I did. Tunes I found myself looking most forward to whenever I listen to this CD are "Dear Louise", the kick-ass "Try Another Day", "My Mind Cries", "Magic Potion" (both Liquid Visions and Sun Dial has covered this gem), the tripping "Free As A Breeze" and the refreshing "Cast A Spell". Line-up: Mike Brancaccio and Terry Martin-guitar & vocals, Timothy du Feu-bass and Phil Fox-drums. Should appeal to fans of Tomorrow, the Creation, Fluer De Lys, the Misunderstood, Eyes, Outsiders, Q 65 and the Missing Links. Some of the best music that you've never heard. Essential.

This is the first time I ever bought a CD based on the Amazon recommendations. It kept popping up when I pulled up Clear Light. Their being a British psychedelic band piqued my interest, as most other psychedelic bands I have music for are American.

I popped the CD into the car player and have been playing it for three days on my commute to and from work. That means I've listened to it all the way through at least five times. I needed that many plays to try and get a feel for the music, as nothing special jumped out at me.

There are many things I appreciate about The Open Mind. One thing is that they are not afraid to mix things up, with their odd harmonies and rhythm changes. There is also some cool fuzz guitar, driving bass and drums. The vocal harmonies, at times, almost sound like they are switching keys from what the instruments are doing. I also admire that the singer is a musician and not just fronting the band.

That being said, after so many listens, I still have trouble recalling any of their songs. When I try, instead of their songs popping into mind, I get songs by Dragonfly and once in a while Morgen. I have no idea why that is happening, but it must say something about the songs themselves. I guess they are just not all that memorable. The album also suffers from a poor mix. At first listen, all I heard was drums, bass, vocals and the occasional fuzz guitar. After so many go-arounds, I really have to listen close to hear the rhythm guitar. It is there, but it doesn't seem to drive the songs or fill things in very well.

I usually like to mention songs that stand out to me, but in this case, I can't think of any. They are all good, but just nothing special. They don't seem to have that spark that makes the songs memorable.

This review is for the out of print release on the Second Battle label, from a third party seller. This is one of the classics of the '60s UK psych genre which has been reissued several times over the years. I imagine the reissues have sold more than it did back in 1969. The tunes are catchy and the guitar work is excellent. This reissue has excellent sound quality and two excellent bonus tracks, but is bare bones with no liner notes. The currently in print version on the Sunbeam label has four bonus tracks and presumably detailed liner notes based on a few of their other releases I have; can't vouch for its sound quality.
