This text can change your life.,

Ever since i started to use [...] I have enjoyed it. I like the diversified approach that is used. Not only that it is open source, and open document format, but also that it has a lot of features that Microsoft Word does not include, or do not have to offer.
One of the unique features is that you can import Word, Word Pro [Lotus SmartSuite], and even WordPerfect files and they are automatically recognized. In most cases the export side works well also. This manual is well written, for both the newbie to OpenOffice and to the experienced person who has used other word processing programs.

I was a power MS Word user....until now...,

The only reason I stuck with MS Word for so long was the good manuals I could buy to support it....but I was looking for something else as a good alternative...I knew about Open Office, I had it on my computer, but not until I bought this complete Open Office Writer Guide was I able to unlock the power of Writer.
I can tell you this is more then a 'guide' is a fully complete manual - an A to Z! If you want to give Writer a try invest in this book, you wont regret it, and you'll save money on software too! Great edition!

This text on OOo writer is well worth the price as it provides greater clarity on many fine points of writer; it can't, of course, fix some still remaining problems of writer: not seamless integration with 2.4; the table tool chart will blink out on you if try to move it -- and it never returns even after restart (delete and reinstall); a few other problem areas, such as (in book) need greater clarity on altering table cells' contents after creating (some options not clear; others don't work), but all-in-all the 3.0 writer a great program, and the book an immense help.

Who profits from sales of this book?,

This review is from: Open Office .org 3 WRITER Guide: OpenOffice.org 3.0, 548 pages (Paperback)
This book is published by a person not associated in any way with the OOoAuthors Team, who does not show anywhere in the book who they are, nor do they acknowledge in the book that they are getting the profits from sales of the book on Amazon.com, and are not sending anything on to the [...] community that produced the book. In contrast, the Friends of OpenDocument Inc publishes the book through [...]
and provides the profits to the community (and publishes its financial records on its website). Prospective purchasers are urged to buy the book from Lulu.com, not this reprint. BTW, a newer version of this book (updated for OpenOffice.org 3.2) is also available through [...]

I teach computer classes at a local Senior Citizen Center. We still have Word 2003 on the computers in our lab. Some of our students have Word 20007 and some have 2010. It's not easy for these students to learn in 2003 in the lab and try to do the same thing at home with 2007 or 2010, so beginning in Sept. we will be teaching OpenOffice. This book has over 500 pages but the information seems to be very well organized and easy to understand. The instructions are easy to follow and the program is very similar to Word, those not necessarily presented in the same manner. From what I've observed so far, it seems to be a good alternative for Microsoft Word.
This book, along with another one on OpenOffice, was purchased through Amazon.

A mediocre book about a mediocre product. Word on a bad day is far better. Worst fault to me is I cannot get an outline view for a 300+ page document.

Sure, this has all the basic information, but you'd get that on the Help menu, and perhaps even more. It certainly didn't have the tweaks and tricks and expert hints I was hoping for.
