Overlooked party rock album,

1993's Open to the Public was the second (and final) album from NYC rockers Spread Eagle. Here's another band that should have been moderately successful towards the tail end of the hair metal movement, but for whatever reason never really got any attention. Between the fact that there were about a million bands playing this kind of music at the time and the fact that the band was on the "sign `em and forget about `em" label MCA, I guess Spread Eagle never really had a prayer.
It's a shame Open to the Public didn't get more attention, because it's a better than average "hair metal" album that seemed somewhat more authentic than what most of the band's L.A. counterparts were releasing at the time. It's a little bit funky, a little bit bluesy, and has that undeniable New York party rock energy. They're like the East Coast equivalent of Bang Tango. Open to the Public is just a fun, rockin' album that just about any child of the 80's should enjoy, especially if you missed it the first time around (like I did).

This group seems to have not made a BIG impact upon the Music world. So it's funy that I actualy enjoyed them sooo much! Their obvious musical talent, and rather good singing, made this album an easy listener! great electric guitar (lead), was well done, and very well executed. Great music, and great album altogether, check it out , and enjoy!(p.s. Hi, Roma Butram!) :)S.B.D.

I purchased this as a CD upon its original release in 1993 based on my experience with the debut entitled "Spread Eagle", and then reading stellar reviews in the "then" industry mags, RIP, Circus, Kerrang, etc. College stations on the East Coast (WSOU, WNHU to name two) were playing it to death. After seventeen years, this recording still stands up not only due to the strong song writing but also because the sound was unique while still being heavy. The two ballads on here, Fade Away and Faith, are neither lyrically weak nor is the music cliche. "I'll be there for you" (Fade Away) can apply to a drug addicted family member as easily as a spouse. "Fade Away" sets a standard for emotional creativity and integrity. The album's vocal harmonies on "High Horses" coupled with a rhythmic thump on "King of the Dogs" that rivals many thrash band riffs (past or present) make this a brilliant hard rock collection. This is the Def Leppard or Motley Crue album you always thought would be cool "if only it were heavier". Spread Eagle... is not only Open to the Public but still "Relevant to the Public" as well.
Note: Singer Ray West's new project (2009) is called All Pointz West and does well to pick up where this one left off. It's Tool meets Testament backstage at a Tesla concert.

By the time that Spread Eagle released Open To The Public, the music buying majority had turned their backs on all things party-rock and hair-metal. This in itself is a travesty, due to the fact, that in my own opinion, some of the absolute best music made by hair-metal or party-rock bands were in the early 1990's.
I know alot of people who were disappointed with this record. I guess everybody expected Open To The Public, was just going to be Spread Eagle part two. When in all reality, this record holds up just as well as their first release. Apparently, alot of people were turned off by their strong suggestive lyrics on their first album. I for the life of me, can't figure out who in the world listens to a band named Spread Eagle, and expexts John Lennon. Without a doubt, their rookie record is one of my favorites from the genre, and Open To The Public, is not far behind. If you have'nt heard this record, and are a big fan of all things 1980's and early 1990's hard rock, you owe it to yourself to buy this record. The album is fantastic, and I can't imagine any hard rock fan being disappointed. |
