4.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in good tone, August 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Open Road (Audio CD)
Not many people will argue that joe henderson has a great tone. Likewise, not many people will argue that coltrane, rollins and dexter gordon had great tones. Don Braden's tone on this cd is at par with the great tones of these other players. A mixture of these four players tones, his lies somewhere between that of rollins and trane. He uses this massive tone on this album to wail over this album of standards. Its a great album to own for those who are trying to expose themselves to a vintage jazz with a modern feel and by modern players. His work on Lush Life, a billy strayhorn standard, is an example of why deutes work. On Scrapple from the apple he tears into the standard and gives it a copletley new direction. It is an album that players and listeners alike should own.
