Book Description

London Guide March 1998
Do you know how to convince a London cabbie that you're local? A simple, honest way to avoid paying the hefty admission fees most museums charge in the British capital? How to get into Wimbledon without planning ahead or mortgaging the house? This book answers these and thousands of other practical questions about London. It shows readers how to get tickets for the best shows, the quickest ways to get around town, and where to find a great meal in London. Find out where to view the original handwitten manuscripts of early Beatles songs, why your favourite ale tastes different from pub to pub, and where to find the prettiest secret garden in London. Information is included on: familiar and unfamiliar museums, from the Elgin Marbles to the first Rolls Royce; how to see the Queen in person; where Michael Caine buys his groceries; which dining hot-spots you're likely to run into royalty or Elvis Costello? The reader also will find out about Christopher Wren churches, #25 a night Bed and Breakfast within walking distance of Harrods, and how to have a wonderful holiday with the kids. The reader will find tons of museums, monuments, famous homes, a mini-guide to the pubs of London and special activities reviewed in "London Guide". Excursions to the surrounding countryside are also included, from the university town of Oxford to the great antiquing centre of Sandwich, from the fairytale Castle of Windsor to the stately grounds of Hampton Court.

This review is from: Open Road's London Guide (Paperback)
What splendid guides Meg Rossoff and Caren Acker are! They know everything there is to know about London and they're willing to reveal it. They are delightfully opinionated and contagiously enthusiastic. This book will be of immense value to newcomers and to old London hands alike: there's that much in it, from the basics to the most hidden (the hows and whats and whys of pubgoing, for instance, that will enable you to pass for an experienced local). For those who travel with kids, this will simplify and enrich your visit. I know London well, and yet they manage to come up with a "favorites" list of hotels most of which were new to me, all of which were within reach on a splurge, and all of which sounded utterly charming in its individual way. It is this blend of a highly personal approach with solid information that makes the book both such a valuable guide and such a wonderful read. Top marks!
