Classic Paul!,
This review is from: Open Season (Audio CD)
Heart wrenching, fun, clever, beautiful! A must own for a Westerberg fans. My only gripe is the three non-paul songs; you can't have it all but pretty darn close!

The Paul songs on this are really amazing, some of his best songwriting since the Replacements. It's really fun, and the production hits all the right places. I'd see the movie just to hear these songs on a really big loud system. I can live with the non-Paul stuff, like the previous reviewer. And it's good to hear Talking Heads, actually. Wonderful. I never like soundtracks, but this really is best viewed as a Westerberg CD. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

A Great Paul EP....,

I was a little afraid when i heard about this release. I never really wanted Paul to come out of the basement. But, I was pleasantly surprised upon hearing this stuff. Track by Track:
1. Meet me in the Meadow - A great leadoff track. Worthless yet fun and energetic. 2. Love you in the Fall - Perhaps the catchiest song on the album. A great pop song. Cheesy? Sure. But undeniably infectious. Tommy Stinson plays Bass on this one and sings backups. 3. I Belong - A tear jerking naked ballad that only Paul can deliver. (a stripped down version is available on the vinyl release) 4. I wanna Lose Control - Deathray - A dancy throwaway. It's fine, but it's just an irritant when i want to hear more Paul. 5. Better than This - This song sound like it could've been on Eventually. Really poppy and snappy. Great Bass Sound. 6. Wild Wild Life - Talking Heads - Meh! 7. Right to Arm Bears - Paul and Tommy on a straight ahead rocker. It sounds like the two new 'Mats tracks on the Best of. 8. Good Day - It's a great song, but previously released years ago. 9. All About Me - Sounds like a "Folker" outtake. Filler, but good filler. 10. Wild as I Wanna Be- Deathray - These guys take on this song that Paul wrote and make it boring. (Paul's version is only on the vinyl release) 11. Whisper Me Luck - Another Ballad. Shaky and Solemn. Great song. 12. I Belong (reprise) - Pete Yorn - Pete's take on Paul's song. He does a decent job and switches it up a bit. Overall, it's a bummer to skip tracks, but Paul's songs are great and worth the price of admission.

Sloppy fun,

This cd has a kind of loose feel, in keeping with Paul's recent solo work and work under the Grandpaboy alias. I heard the first three songs and thought they could have been a little tighter, both in terms of production and composition, but then the cd really picked up steam. Paul's originals stack up nicely next to the Talking Heads' Wild Wild Life, and that's saying a lot because Wild Wild Life is a great song.

It rocks, and it's kid-friendly. Works as a stand-alone PW album too. Just fast-forward through Talking Heads...

I'm listening to this grrrrr-reat album right now. Of course, I liked the movie with my family (among other 'kids at heart') But, this album is truly worthy of a Grammy. It's quite mature for a animated soundtrack. Paul Westerberg does some great songwriting here, with a great vibe to boot. Nice to have The Talking Heads' "Wild, Wild Life" and Pete Yorn's version "I Belong" - My favorite would be Paul's "Love You In The Fall" (Was played during the closing credits- I naturally stayed, snapping my fingers while my 11 yr. old nephew Ian looked at me weirdly) Radio stations like WXRT and KCMP (The Current - Twin Cities) are playing it, you should too!!! "Right To Arm Bears"....YOU BET!!! Got a plunger? Peace - JG "Bear"

Classic paul westerberg, best in a while, good national exposure again,

Paul westerberg is a name that pushed his way to the frontlines of independent music, then Sire records, with his band the replacements in the late 80's, and went out as a solo artist in the 90's with a luke warm reception, but a loyal cult following. Now he gets his day in the spotlight again with the "Open Season" soundtrack. Similar to curious george did with Jack Johnson, Open season features Paul Westerberg as the primary musician. These songs are fun and reminicent of old replacements music and paul's earlier albums. His last couple of releases were more ooutside his regular box, but still good, but he returns to classic form here. Although the songs are based off of the movie, many can stand well on their own. Check it out, listen to the previews here on amazon. A must for Westerberg fans.

Westerberg's songs are beautiful,

Paul Westerberg's songs on this soundtrack are just excellent. I couldn't believe the caliber of the lyrics. His work on Open Season reminds me of Harry Nilsson's work in the animated classic "The Point". Westerberg's work brought me up short . . . I said to myself, "WHO is that?". I had to have the soundtrack. Treat yourself. Such excellent lyrics on original songs combined with work from other artists. You will listen to this one over and over. Highly recommended.

This is a great OST album by ex-Replacement Paul Westerberg. Great songs which can be enjoyed by adults and kids. Comes in a cool 10" album.
