Just Print Online Help Files,
This review is from: Open Source Pro: Joomla (Paperback)
No real insight offered. You are better off printing online manuals and saving yourself the money. Hastily sketches the basics, but doesn't provide outline or structure of the Joomla site so one can create more complex sites.

I wanted a book that will help me get started with Joomla. This book wasn't what I expected - it was just too basic. It did help me to learn Joomla's vocabulary, but that's it. Not recommended.

Not worth the paper it's printed on,

This book offers nothing but an overview of Joomla, and a poor one at that. It is poorly written and offers no depth into even the most basic functionality. I bought the book, and after flipping through it, quickly realized I was better off turning back to the web for knowledge on Joomla. Every now and then, when trying to figure out something in Joomla, I'll flip the book open and realize how foolish I am to think I'd find any answers of use - like returning to an empty refrigerator when hungry, expecting there to be more there than when you last looked.

Great book to get started with Joomla!,
This review is from: Open Source Pro: Joomla (Paperback)
I purchased the book: Open Source Pro: Joomla! with no prior knowledge of Joomla. I found the book very helpful, especially all the examples. With it I was easily able to create a couple of practice sites of my own and now I feel ready to use Joomla! for my client's sites.

I used Open Source Pro: Joomla! to create my website and I found it to
be very easy to understand. I have recommended it to several friends and they have commented on the ease of creating their websites. All of the examples are well explained an can help a programmer setup a website with confidence. The book was easy to read and follow, I recommend if you are planning to set up a website with Joomla.

This book is a nice written intro to using Joomla, but has nothing in depth to help you get past the very basic operation of Joomla. I was hoping for much more from something called "Pro".

One of the First but not one of the Best.,

I bought this book based on 2 factors:
1. This book was one of the first books on Joomla! rather than Mambo. 2. This book was the least expensive of what was available at the time. Now - the nice thing about books is that they are portable and you can read them anywhere. However - the online manual on Joomla! org has much more detailed information and is organized a lot better than this book. Plus, the online manual describes components, modules and bots rather than showing you specific examples of modules that already exist. This book seemed to have used those examples of to fill the pages of an already thin book. While this book did help me learn the very basic set-up of Joomla!, The "Pro" part of the title leaves much to be desired. I have tried other CMS but Joomla! is hands down my favorite. This book has many grammar and spelling errors and was probably put out as a quick title when options were thin. My suggestion would be to try a book from a better publisher and one that puts more emphasis and detail on how to create components, modules and bots rather than using ones that already exist.

you aren't going to get much more out of this book than if you read the documentation from Joomla.
