Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Here’s a tale about friends and books and the great qualities of both. Rabbit, Frog, Bear, and Ladybug are all reading their own books, but when Giant can’t open his small title, they work together to make sure he can get in on the joy of reading. Cleverly designed as books nestled within smaller—and then larger—books, this bright offering is rich with vivid colors. Children will be drawn in at many levels: the pithy text, the fun illustrations, and the interactive format that can be used for everything from learning about size and colors to opening books. At first glance, this seems deceptively simple. But debut author Klausmeier and artist Lee, creator of the joyous Wave (2008), have provided a fresh offering that will keep kids mulling over the multilayered love of hold-’em-in-your-hands books. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Melissa Moore

Every time you open this book, you open another, then another, and another. Each time, you discover something different in the illustrations (my favorite are the book covers themselves). I don't even have kids, but as someone who loves a sweet story, beautiful illustration and clever design, it's just perfect. I know kids will love it too. Highly recommend!

Open This Little Book is a wonderful and imaginative way to both tell children a cute story and encourage them to read and enjoy the world of books. This book clearly comes from the minds of two women who grew up loving books and want to share that passion with us. Anyone who likes to read and wants to foster a love of books in their children would benefit from this book being added to their collection. I plan to read it to my kids as a starting point for our nightly story sessions.

Just bought "Open This Little Book" for my almost 3-year old daughter, and before I even read her the title, she shouted "Look at this little book inside this big book!" Such a fun read for both of us. The smaller the pages got, the more fascinated she became, and the overall message of encouraging reading resonated with me as a parent. Let's hope Ms. Klausmeier's got some more literary tricks up her sleeve, because this debut will be hard to top!

I gave this book to my 5-year-old granddaughter and she says she likes the book "because I can read it all by myself. I like when I open the little rainbow book. It is small so the giant can't open it. He needs help and his friends help him." Open This Little Book engages and supports young reader's developing skills. Parents and teachers will enjoy watching their children's eyes glow with excitement and pride as they read each page of this delightful book!

OPEN THIS LITTLE BOOK is one *very* special book! It's a love letter to books and the joy of reading. As soon as I opened it and read it out loud to a group, we discovered it was a book within a book within a book. Smiles filled the room! Then the smiles got bigger and bigger as the books got smaller and smaller inside! It was magical. Everyone wanted to read it again and again and again! This book is a genius format, a phenomenally good idea, and a brilliant debut for the author, Jesse Klausmeier. We have all Suzy Lee's books in our home as well, and adore her illustration. What a power duo, and what an amazingly good book. I'm ordering five more copies of OPEN THIS LITTLE BOOK on Amazon right now, because I know many others who need to open this little book, too! Five stars (and I would give it more if I could!)

Though this book might cater to the ages 4-8 crowd, I think anyone who loves books and reading will enjoy this gem of a picture book. The idea is ingenious - each page is designed as a cover for a book which also reveals a story leading on to the next story, and the following page is designed as the cover of another book, which happens to be smaller than the previous book. For example, on the first page, a white rabbit, a frog, and a ladybug are depicted reading books and there's a caption "Open this little book" in caps. When this page is turned there's a short caption "Open this..." and on the next page, readers are greeted by the cover of a book titled "Little Red Book" which when flipped, reveals a delightful setting - a ladybug sitting by a pot of tea under some toadstools and reading a tiny green book. The next page shows the cover for another book, smaller than the first one, titled "Little Green Book", and so the story goes.

Each time a page is turned, another delight awaits the reader. The text is simple, but the magic of this charming picture book is not really in the text but in the enchanting format and illustrations which depict woodland creatures who are bound to each other in friendship through their shared love of reading. As each page is turned, the adventures that readers experience within the pages of a book is portrayed through these woodland creatures who can be interpreted as embodying avid readers everywhere. It is a loving ode to the joys and magic of reading as well as to friendship. My eight-year-old and I enjoyed this so much we read it over and over again, and this will certainly delight readers of all ages.

I can't believe the reviews I've read here! I am a retired reading specialist, and I've read thousands of children's books. THERE'S NO BOOK HERE! You open a book, and then you close a book. It's amazing to me than anyone would publish this book. Please tell me -- what do you think I'm missing?????

My 7-year old daughter was very excited to get this at home (apparently, she'd already loved it when another child brought it in to share at school). She adores opening each page and finding yet another smaller and smaller book inside each section. Great and inventive book!
