Book Description

Doctors removed Jake Olson’s left eye at ten months old. When he was twelve, after years of radiation and chemotherapy, the cancer took his right eye as well. That’s when Jake’s story really began.

When ESPN met Jake Olson, he was a twelve-year-old boy who wanted to spend his final weeks of sight with the USC football team. Jake’s story became one of the most recognized pieces in the network’s history, earning an award, instantly viewed by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. But Jake’s story didn’t end with his final surgery or with ESPN—not by a long shot.

Now sixteen, Jake Olson dreams of becoming the first blind golfer in the PGA. How is such a thing even possible? How does that level of perseverance endure in someone with so many reasons to give up?

In Open Your Eyes, Jake Olson tells more than his story. He reveals the ways of thinking, living, and praying that have kept him and his family triumphant in the face of their tribulations. Told with sincerity and humor in tandem with leadership coach McKay Christensen, Open Your Eyes is not just a heartwarming chronicle of the Olson family’s struggle. Jake’s story is a step-by-step lesson in perseverance and motivation from a young man who knows how to put the past in the past.

From the USC locker room to the fairways of Pebble Beach, Jake Olson will inspire you, your family, and your team with bravery, ability, and faith. It is time to learn from this remarkable young man and open your eyes to a happier life.

Jake Olsen's story gives hope to the rest of us.

The book is written in a format that shows "Insights from Jake" and outlines all parts of Jake's journey from being sighted to blindness. While many of us would shudder at the thought of losing our sight and trying to deal with it, Jake's story involves a deliberate move (via an operation to save him from spreading cancer) into total blindness. He shares his fears with us along his journey but the things that shine brightest are the stories of hope which he shares and tries to instill in his readers.

The book is written from a Christian perspective and Jake is not afraid for ONE IOTA to let the world know about his relationship with Christ. Through his battles he has become a stronger person and an inspiration to all of us. When Jake speaks about the "choice to be happy", I find myself trusting his word and experiences more since he has had to live through such trials. It's amazing how he can so openly share about his tough journey and find peace and happiness in it. His life's work is set!

The book is written in an engaging and easy format that goes back and forth between Jake's voice and experiences and those of his co-author. It isn't only Jake's story here though ... there are other inspirational athletes who have struggled and overcome. Jake's journey continues and the story and hope he shares will certainly be an inspiration to many.

God bless this kid! What a story and what hope for the rest of us. Simple lessons to take to heart and once done so ... we can live a lot happier, a lot freer and truly feel and experience blessings. Written from the heart, this is a great way to begin 2014!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring story December 31, 2013

Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life
by Jake Olson, McKay Christensen

As a child Jake Olson had cancer and went blind. This is an uplifting story of his courage and strength, how he handled the bad news, the hurdles he faced and what it took to keep him moving on. We learn some tips on coping with life, also how Jake relied on his religious beliefs and faith to get him through the rough times in his life.

One thing I liked was Jake's courage and never-give-up attitude. He took a tragic event in his life and shows us that life does go on, and you can achieve what ever you want no matter what .

* I was lucky to get this book as a gift.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disapointed March 16, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Not what I expected. This book is written by McKay Christensen, PhD. Some chapters contain a few paragraphs (less than a page) written by Jake or his family. The content of the book is good. I was disappointed that the author was not the blind teenager. If you are looking for a book written by a PhD on what can help a person deal with difficult situations, then it would be a good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars He is here for a bigger purpose! February 8, 2014

Jake is an inspiration to us all. He and his family have met this ordeal and used it to teach us all how to overcome by clinging to hope. I took a quote from him and set it over my desk at work. Thanks Jake!
"no doubt we let inspiration come and go hundreds of times in our lives. But what if we started living and not let one more pass us by?"
Let Jake's story inspire you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jake Olson's vision January 22, 2014
When I was asked to read and review Open Your Eyes, I had no idea what a profound impression Jake, his parents, and Dr. Christensen would have in my life. This book is not only Jake’s astounding journey of faith, but also an inspirational guide for the rest of us to follow. Cancer may have taken his sight but his vision is remarkable. Yes, he has wonderful parents, a fabulous sister, and a support system that anyone would envy. But having God at the helm to guide him through darkness has led this young man to see better than most of us sighted folks ever hope to. He truly sees the light that we all hope to find. I am forever blessed and changed by reading this book. I recommend Open Your Eyes to every reader out there. And be sure to pass it along to your children as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Through the Hard Things January 3, 2014
This is one of those books you might hesitate to read because you know that something awful happens before you even begin. So I did put off starting this book for quite awhile and then cautiously began.

It is a book that could be tragic but is so filled with determination, hope, and even thankfulness.

Jake's family is made aware very early in his life that he has cancer in his eyes and that he will lose his eyes. But the inevitable comes years later than they expected and for that they are all thankful. But the day does come.

And this is why you should not be afraid to read this book: It is, in spite of such a tragedy, amazingly hope filled. Jake and his family are Christians and it so shines through, especially here in the hard things.
