I have been using Open Office for some time, so I knew what I was getting before I bought this. OO is an office-style productivity suite with all of the bells and whistles. It parallels MS Office in many ways and the switch over from MS Office is not especially trying. It is very customizable. You can also save your work in MS Word format which is great for passing documents, and if you ever do decide to switch back to Mr. Softee you won't lose your files. You do it this way:

In WRITER which is the word processor, go to the Tools Menu -> Options -> Load/Save -> General. In the lower right corner of the dialog box is a space marked "Always save as". Choose Microsoft 97/2000 from the pull down menu. You are in business.

Open Office does not have the plethora of after market manuals and guides that Microsoft does, but there are some. There is an on-line manual and some tutorials put out by the Open Office group. For those who are addicted to paper, you might consider these:

Beginning Open Office 3 by Andy Channelle

[...].

Both are respectable and available through Amazon.

Hope this helped.

If you want a inexpensive no nonsense office/home/school software that does all that the high dollar software does, this is your choice. Let's face it....there are not alot of choices out there either, but the OpenOffice delivers. No problems with downloading (I'm on dial-up and it was amazingly fast)I was shocked at how easy and fast it was. It's uncomplicated, straight forward with more options than I will ever use. I could not afford the microsoft office products they were just to high. You will not be sorry for this purchase. After ordering, I got the package well within the expected time frame of delivery. Thank you Amazon and Flexiety Software!!!

I am very pleased with Open Office. I replaced Microsoft Office 2003. I can do more with it and it is simpler to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Worthy MSOffice Replacement, March 1, 2010

I purchased this software via Flexiety and am extremely pleased with both Flexiety as well as the software. I am really blown away by the software - it is extremely smooth and polished and has tons more capability than I will ever use. I was very hesitant to leave the "comfortable shoes" of Microsoft Office but I am extremely glad that I did. There is comprehensive PDF documentation for this software at the [...] website. If you have any concerns about the purchase of this software, go to the website and download the documentation. That is what I did and I have absolutely no regrets for having purchased the software. At these prices, it is a no-brainer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good office suite software, September 25, 2011

I ordered this software after seeing recommendations in computer magazines. My requirements are not very demanding, and this suite is fine for me. It has the ability to export data readable in the high priced Microsoft and other suites and I have used that feature successfully for about a year now. Free updates are available online by the maker, also.

The item came immediately but I had expected a better product. A friend recommended it or I probably would not have bought it. Live and Learn!!

Anyone who pays for this program has paid too much. Open Office is totally free software, available for download at it's official site, openoffice.org. There, you can download it as many times as you want, get support from their forums, and not pay a dime.

I use Lotus Symphony, which is also free, and which I have had better luck with. It's based on Open Office, but I have not had the problems with it that I had with Open Office.
