Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Opening Day is the second of four books in the Matt Davis Mystery Series.  In it, Matt leaves the New York City Police Department and takes a job as Chief of Police in Roscoe, New York.  The reason I chose Roscoe, a real town, for the setting is because I have been going there for nearly 40 years to trout fish.  The local knowledge and experience I gleaned from ten years spent there as a professional fly fishing guide has enabled me to color the books with a true sense of authenticity.
The first book in the series was As The Twig Is Bent.  The third and fourth, also set in Roscoe, are: Twice Bitten and Broken Promises.
As a result of my connection with Roscoe, in April of 2012, I was invited by the Roscoe Chamber of Commerce to be its celebrity first caster at its opening-day-of-trout-season ceremony.  This was a tremendous honor for me and my family.

About the Author

Joe Perrone Jr is an author whose diverse background includes time spent as a sportswriter for a prominent New Jersey newspaper, the Passaic-Clifton Herald News, and also as a freelance advertising copywriter.  In addition, he has had numerous short stories published in the Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide.  From 1989-1999, Joe was a professional fly fishing guide on the historic Beaverkill River, located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York State.   The nearby town of Roscoe, dubbed Trout Town USA, serves as the setting for three of Joe's Matt Davis mysteries: Opening Day (the first was As the Twig is Bent, published in early 2009) Twice Bitten, and Broken Promises, released in 2013.
In addition to the Matt Davis mysteries, Joe also authored a fifth novel, Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening, a hilarious yet poignant look at coming of age in the tumultuous Sixties. His non-fiction works are: A "Real" Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...) and Gone Fishin' with Kids (How to Take Your Kid Fishing and Still be Friends), co-authored with Manny Luftglass.
Presently, Joe lives with his wife of 32 years, Becky, and the couple's two cats, Cassie and Callie, in the mountains of western North Carolina.

More About the Author

Joe Perrone Jr. worked as a sportswriter for the Passaic-Clifton, NJ, Herald News, as well as a freelance advertising copywriter. Joe was also a professional fly-fishing guide for ten years in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and has had several fly-fishing short stories published in the Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide. The author is perhaps best known for his Matt Davis Mystery Series, which includes "As the Twig is Bent," "Opening Day," "Twice Bitten," and "Broken Promises" (the most recent in the series). All but the first in the series are actually set in Roscoe, NY, the small Upstate New York fishing village where Joe was a guide. Joe's first novel, "Escaping Innocence (A Story of Awakening)," was published in 2008, and is an evocative coming-of-age novel set in the turbulent '60s. In addition to his five novels, Joe has authored two non-fiction works, "A 'Real' Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...)," published in 2009 and "Gone Fishin' with Kids (How to Take Your Kid Fishing and Still be Friends)," co-authored with Manny Luftglass, and published in 1997.

"As the Twig is Bent" and "Opening Day" are currently available as AUDIO BOOKS, distributed through Audible.com. "Twice Bitten" and "Broken Promises" will be available in audio books later in 2013, as well as "Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening," which is currently being recorded and will become available in August. The audio books will be distributed by ACX.com through Amazon.com, Audible.com, and iTunes.

"Opening Day" was recently awarded an Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion, and in 2011, "As The Twig Is Bent" was translated into Portuguese as "Pau que nasce torto" by Rafa Lombardino of Word Awareness, Inc. of Santee, CA. Plans are underway to translate "Opening Day" into Portuguese in the very near future. All of Joe's books are available in paperback or in Kindle editions on Amazon.com.

When he is not writing, Joe enjoys fly fishing, cooking, listening to music, and watching movies. He makes at least one trip a year to the Catskills to fish his beloved Beaverkill, Willowemoc, and other trout streams; and uses the time to recharge his batteries and conceive new plots for his books.

Joe lives in Western North Carolina with his wife, Becky, and the couple's two cats, Callie and Cassie. The author enjoys hearing from his readers, and can be reached with comment and questions via Email at: joetheauthor@joeperronejr.com or by visiting his website at www.joeperronejr.com

this is the 2nd book of the Matt Davis Series that i read after stumbling across this talented author. although As the Twig is Bent will keep you guessing, this book was much easier to stomach. i think i figured out the killer before i figured out which one the victim would be! fast paced, easy read, easy to relate to & identify with characters. looking forward to the 3rd book of the series to come out.

"Opening Day" kept me in suspense the whole time. Not only did I not know who the killer was, but I couldn't guess which of the vulnerable young women was the victim. The settings an the character descriptions were vivid and chilling."

Opening Day: A Matt Davis MysteryI am a retired Federal Lawenforcement Officer and reading "Opening Day" brought back memories of some of my old difficuilt cases. I am also a fisherman and enjoyed the descriptions of trout fishing. The author used a different style by having three stories going on as well as the main story. This is an easy reading book but keeps your interest. A great Book.

I've read all three Matt Davis Stories and he had me hooked in from the first page of "As the Twig is Bent" and I hope this will be a long running series . I especially loved Openning Day because it lent itself to great character development of Matt Davis...A regular guy with high morals and expectations and yes perhaps an occaisional leaning to proffessional burnout. (We've all been there} I love the way he mulls over the cases over and over until something clicks. The psychological twists near the book's end are disturbing yet gratifying. Joe Perrone's characters are real and tangible...I meet them every day...people who struggle to either make it to the top-or to simply survive, However His choice of settings are just remarkable. These are places that middle America forgets about and are fodder for mysteries and High jingo abounding. Fiction but real stuff man, really real. Keep it up Joe

In this sequel to "As the Twig is Bent", Mr. Perrone's detective, Matt Davis, has semi-retired to a small town in upstate New York to pursue his passion for fishing and get away, or so he thought, from the type of mayhem that he experienced far too much of while on the job in NYC. His last case as one of New York's finest had him matching wits with a serial killer, a battle that nearly cost him his life. In this case he must first try to find out who the victim is before he can even begin to look for the killer. Slowly but surely the clues start falling into place, and the chase is on.
