Book Description

Young girls are coming through a small Upstate New York village, but...they aren't all coming out--alive!
Following a close brush with death as an NYPD homicide detective, Matt Davis takes early retirement, and accepts what appears to be a cushy position as Chief of Police of a three-man department in a small, rural Upstate New York village. While out fly-fishing on his favorite stream on the opening day of trout season, Matt stumbles across the murdered remains of a body, barely recognizable as a human being, killed approximately six months earlier. With no real physical evidence-no clothing, no identification, and no clues-it's up to Matt to not only identify the murderer, but to find the identity of the victim.
But, in the end, it's the revelation of the unlikely killer's identity that will shock this tight-knit community to its very core, and leave the reader begging for more. Opening Day is the second in the Matt Davis Mystery Series, and picks up where As the Twig is Bent left off.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Opening Day is the second of four books in the Matt Davis Mystery Series.  In it, Matt leaves the New York City Police Department and takes a job as Chief of Police in Roscoe, New York.  The reason I chose Roscoe, a real town, for the setting is because I have been going there for nearly 40 years to trout fish.  The local knowledge and experience I gleaned from ten years spent there as a professional fly fishing guide has enabled me to color the books with a true sense of authenticity.
The first book in the series was As The Twig Is Bent.  The third and fourth, also set in Roscoe, are: Twice Bitten and Broken Promises.
As a result of my connection with Roscoe, in April of 2012, I was invited by the Roscoe Chamber of Commerce to be its celebrity first caster at its opening-day-of-trout-season ceremony.  This was a tremendous honor for me and my family.

About the Author

Joe Perrone Jr is an author whose diverse background includes time spent as a sportswriter for a prominent New Jersey newspaper, the Passaic-Clifton Herald News, and also as a freelance advertising copywriter.  In addition, he has had numerous short stories published in the Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide.  From 1989-1999, Joe was a professional fly fishing guide on the historic Beaverkill River, located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York State.   The nearby town of Roscoe, dubbed Trout Town USA, serves as the setting for three of Joe's Matt Davis mysteries: Opening Day (the first was As the Twig is Bent, published in early 2009)Twice Bitten, and Broken Promises, released in 2013.
In addition to the Matt Davis mysteries, Joe also authored a fifth novel, Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening, a hilarious yet poignant look at coming of age in the tumultuous Sixties. His non-fiction works are: A "Real" Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...)and Gone Fishin' with Kids (How to Take Your Kid Fishing and Still be Friends), co-authored with Manny Luftglass.
Presently, Joe lives with his wife of 32 years, Becky, and the couple's two cats, Cassie and Callie, in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
this is the 2nd book of the Matt Davis Series that i read after stumbling across this talented author. although As the Twig is Bent will keep you guessing, this book was much easier to stomach. i think i figured out the killer before i figured out which one the victim would be! fast paced, easy read, easy to relate to & identify with characters. looking forward to the 3rd book of the series to come out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me in suspense June 7, 2010
"Opening Day" kept me in suspense the whole time. Not only did I not know who the killer was, but I couldn't guess which of the vulnerable young women was the victim. The settings an the character descriptions were vivid and chilling."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery April 2, 2010
By Ex Fed
Opening Day: A Matt Davis MysteryI am a retired Federal Lawenforcement Officer and reading "Opening Day" brought back memories of some of my old difficuilt cases. I am also a fisherman and enjoyed the descriptions of trout fishing. The author used a different style by having three stories going on as well as the main story. This is an easy reading book but keeps your interest. A great Book.

I've read all three Matt Davis Stories and he had me hooked in from the first page of "As the Twig is Bent" and I hope this will be a long running series . I especially loved Openning Day because it lent itself to great character development of Matt Davis...A regular guy with high morals and expectations and yes perhaps an occaisional leaning to proffessional burnout. (We've all been there} I love the way he mulls over the cases over and over until something clicks. The psychological twists near the book's end are disturbing yet gratifying. Joe Perrone's characters are real and tangible...I meet them every day...people who struggle to either make it to the top-or to simply survive, However His choice of settings are just remarkable. These are places that middle America forgets about and are fodder for mysteries and High jingo abounding. Fiction but real stuff man, really real. Keep it up Joe

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Tale? August 9, 2013
By River
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Joe Perrone Jr hsd produced a satisfying mystery about teenaged girls gone missing. This is a familiar trope of detective fiction, but Perrone handles the subject with guile and style. His depiction of every parent's nightmare becomes a cautionary tale for our time, revealing what happens when trust is misplaced and the obvious is ignored. This excellent novel in the Matt Davies series is a well plotted, fast-paced page-turner which kept this reader reading into the night - totally entertaining. I shall be looking for more.
