5.0 out of 5 stars A Succinct, Master Survey, November 30, 2004
The title and subtitle describe this volume perfectly, and Alan Blyth, one of the very best of British critics (emphasis on the critical, not the British!) has done an admirable, utterly unassailable job.

To an extent, this is an update on Opera on Record, the three volumes of which Blyth was general editor (and superb contributor) to. Blyth ought really to update at least this small volume (by comparison to the more vast Opera on Recod.) This is really a fine, fun guide, excellently written, as always with this brilliant musical writer.
