Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this thoughtful study, historian and opera lover Robinson relates music to the history of ideas by analyzing sever al major operas: The Marriage of Fi garo, The Barber of Seville, Les Troyens, Don Carlo, Die Meistersing er, and Der Rosenkavalier. He also considers two Schubert song cycles. Robinson's thesis is that composers' at titues toward society, philosophy, and politics have influenced the musical/ dramatic structure of many operas. To be sure, Robinson sometimes over states the music's philosophical signifi cance, but overall he presents his argu ment compellingly and eloquently, and his command of musical history is most : impressive. In sum, a stimulating and welcome contribution to the literature, and highly recommended. Bryan C. Stoneburner, Univ. of Hawaii Lib., Honolulu

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars is not enough..., November 20, 2009

This review is from: Opera and Ideas: From Mozart to Strauss (Paperback)
I'm reading Opera & Ideas for the third time. It is, obviously, a favorite. For anyone who loves opera AND ideas, Paul Robinson is someone to have close at hand. He doesn't review many operas and, in fact, includes two Schubert song cycles in the mix. What he does have to say is done with education, experience and intellectual honesty, to say nothing of his fine ability at writing.

When I accessed this site, it was to see what others had to say. I was confronted by not a single review. I hope you trip over this one and get curious.

You may or may not agree with the author's perspective but he argues it well and is insightful and interesting. This is a very pleasurable book that adds another dimension to some of my favorite operas. Highly recommended.
