I will probably donate my copy to Goodwill as it's currently collecting dust.
The book is split into seven chapters, each chapter focusing on subjects such as Fighting Fat Talk, Family and Friends, Fitness, Food, and Faith. The subject that resonated with me most was Fat-Talk. “Fat Talk” is the idea of shaming yourself for not meeting a perfectionist ideal that is unattainable and determined by societal standards. Like many others, I have been guilty of looking in the mirror with a sigh and feeling down about my appearance, specifically my weight. For young American women, there is incredible pressure to look a certain way. We are taught that appearance is the most important thing about us, but what if we all truly believed we were beautiful despite our flaws? This book helped spark a whole new sense of confidence in me. Now instead of sighing in front of the mirror, I smile and pick out all of the things that make me an amazing and beautiful individual. Of course I still have my insecurities every now and then, but Operation Beautiful has helped me to realize that each imperfection is what makes me unique.
Inspired by Boyle and the testimonies included in her book, I decided to try Operation Beautiful in my college dorm hall bathroom to brighten the days of my friends and possibly even change their lives forever. I began small with a note on the mirror saying, “Write a positive note and post it on the mirror. You are ALL beautiful and loved!Read more ›
It did seem to be more of a bunch of testimonials than what I expected, though.
Still I will be letting my 11 yr read this, as I think this would be good for her to read.
I have been anorexic. I have been obese. And I can tell you that it is absolutely ridiculous and juvenile to suggest that someone deep in the grips of an eating disorder, or someone who truly feels horrible about the way they look, will just magically feel better by reading a positive sticky note left by a total stranger.
