My introduction to Earl Drake, August 18, 2010
This review is from: Operation Breakthrough (Mass Market Paperback)
I had known about the Drake novels, but until recently, had never read anything by this author.
Earl Drake is a skilled burglar and disguise expert recruited by the government after he recovers from an accident which scars his face. The government provides him with a new identity, a new face, and exploits his skills for espionage missions.
The books are narrated from Drake's point of view, and some of his comments on life in general remind me of Travis McGee's remarks which add a good deal to the pleasure of that great John MacDonald series.
The story is well plotted and moves at a quick pace. I like Marlowe's writing style.
You may find Earl Drake a better spy hero than Ian Fleming's 007. If not, you'll still enjoy the character of Earl Drake and the plot of this novel.
I plan to read more in this series.
