HIPV rocks!,
By "hiddeninthestars" (Hackettstown, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Operation: Cut-Throat (Audio CD)
Hidden In Plain View is one of the best bands in the local Jersey scene, hands down! They are a hard-working, down-to-earth bunch of guys, and they are incredibly nice. They can rock a show out like no other, and this CD is amazing from the first to last song. "An American Classic" is just incredible...but each of their songs has the ability to just have this effect on you: put you in a mood, or a memory... it's that emotionally driven. I've heard people talk about HIPV having influences of some bands like Saves the Day, Jimmy Eat World, and The Get Up Kids. However, within those influences, they've been able to carve their own little niche and truly sound unique. This CD is a MUST buy for any punk/"emo"/indie rock fan.

Rumor has it that Hidden in Plain View will be Drive-Thru Records' next band. That's why I took an interest. Well, I gave them a listen and, while I find them to be very talented, I have to be honest. To me, this band sounds exactly like New Found Glory. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing. I'm not trying to be derogatory. I mean, I love New Found Glory. I've heard people accuse The Starting Line of sounding exactly like New Found Glory, which I don't believe is true. But in my opinion, Hidden in Plain View sounds EXACTLY like them. Not just the vocals either. NFG has this unique sound to their instrumentation. And let me tell you, it's not "unique" anymore. To sum up my feelings, I wish they had more of a unique sound, but they don't, and I can live with it. So bring 'em on, Drive Thru. EDIT: After having a little while to get used to their sound, I'm starting to refine my opinion. I can still hear the definite New Found Glory similarity, but I'm also starting to notice that they are very reminiscent of Saves the Day. |
