Breath of Fresh Air,
By A Customer
This review is from: Operation Heavenly (Audio CD)
Usually, I hesitate before hearing a new album. It seems much easier to hear something for a 2nd time for me. So of course, I hesitated before the first listen of 'Operation Heavenly'. At the first song, I was completely okay with hearing the rest of the album for the first time. Because Heavenly is THAT TYPE OF BAND. They rock. Simple. And not the type where they play music just to rock. They rock because they're passionate about it. This album is totally dancable and totally lovable. Don't hesitate to buy it (or listen to it). Songs are yr basic relationship type. But they approach it with heart. On 'Ben Sherman' (my favorite track), she discusses being pressured to sleep with someone who she feels doesn't like her for HER--"When you call my name, it better be me that you want and not anyone else". 'Cut off' is an all-perfect example of what fast punk should be. Her voice is really honest, and smooth as a peice of glass. You can hear her emotion from her voice more than her lyrics, even when she sings in French. In this day and age, I find it we all need this kind of music. This could well pass for pop, actually. Two more words to describe this? Heaven sent.

One of the best idie rock records ever made...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Operation Heavenly (Audio CD)
since I can't honestly say I've heard every single indie recording ever made, I have to say, out of the one's I've heard, this one is way way up there. Heavenly's sound, for the person who's never heard them, is along the lines of the last Lush album (although Heavenly was sounding like this before that album was made). An easier way to describe it would be to say it has compitent guitars, excellent dual female vocals and great lyrics. In the fine tradition of K Records, Calvin Johnson guests on the last song of the album (he also appears on Beck's One Foot in the Grave, which is also out on K). this album is highly highly recomended. thank you. The coolest band ever,
By A Customer
This review is from: Operation Heavenly (Audio CD)
It's very sad that i'm the first person that wants to comment the last album of the coolest band in History. From Talula Gosh to Marine Research (their actual band, after Mathew's dead) they've always made wonderful pop songs that I always like to listen to when I want to feel happy. This record is as great as the others and everyone who really enjoys pop music should have it. We miss you Mathew

Pure, Beautiful Pop,
By "mooghead" (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews

Always mistakenly typecast as a mere "twee band", Heavenly were much more than that -- they were great at constructing the purest pop song with a punk edge, and intelligent lyrics. Amelia Fletcher's take on 60's girl group/ Brill Bldg pop is as fresh today as it was when it was released in 95, and this album sees Heavenly at their tightest, most rehearsed (and sadly the last one with their drummer, Matthew Fletcher). "By the Way" is one of the strongest tracks, a melodic power pop love song as penned by Phil Spector (the organ and chimes in the background are such a great arrangement!!), along with the witticism of "Ben Sherman" (managing to add a possible nod or dis' to Nick Hornby). They also do a great cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Nous Ne Sommes Pas des Anges".

Great Release. You owe it to yourself to get this album. It is one of Heavenly's finest, and one of the best girl-pop albums that you'll ever hear.
