Book Description

May 15, 2008 0226094995 978-0226094991 2
Operation Homecoming is the result of a major initiative launched by the National Endowment for the Arts to bring distinguished writers to military bases to inspire U.S. soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and their families to record their wartime experiences. Encouraged by such authors as Tom Clancy, Tobias Wolff, and Marilyn Nelson, American military personnel and their loved ones wrote candidly about what they saw, heard, and felt while in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as on the home front. These unflinching eyewitness accounts, private journals, short stories, and letters offer an intensely revealing look into extraordinary lives and are an unforgettable contribution to wartime literature.

“One of the chanted mantras of our time is, ‘But I support the troops.’ Terrific. Now read Operation Homecoming to find out who they are, what they think, feel, want, have learned, won and lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.”—Daniel Henninger, Wall Street Journal

“This anthology is the honest voice of war. . . . In the end, they are all one voice, a voice we must hear, and must not forget.”—Jeff Shaara

“These voices are stirring, chilling, and unforgettable.”—Bobbie Ann Mason

“[Captures] what journalists cannot, no matter how close they get—firsthand accounts from the warriors and the families they leave behind.”—Chicago Tribune

“The goal of the project, beyond providing an emotional and expressive outlet for military personnel and their families, and getting the basic eyewitness facts of history down on paper, is to add to a long tradition of war literature. . . . The collection rings with truth, the sort of truth mere obervers of war find hard to capture.”—Washington Post

5.0 out of 5 stars an important book for our time, May 24, 2010

This review is from: Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families, Updated Edition (Research Division Report / National Endowment for the Arts) (Paperback)
Operation Homecoming is an anthology of writings created by military servicemembers involved in the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am one of the contributing authors. The book is the final result of a non-profit writing project sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts. NEA received over 10,000 pages of material. An editorial board spend over a year poring over the massive amount of material they received. 66 works were chosen for publication. While the writers are not professionals, the quality of the writing is uniformly excellent. Much of the writing is gritty and all of it is genuine, intense, moving and completely from the heart. The contributors, including the editorial staff, received no royalties from this book. All proceeds from this book will used by NEA for future similar projects. Operation Homecoming was on many best book lists for 2006 (the year of its release). The book was previewed as a cover story in the New Yorker Magazine in June 2006. Two films resulted from this book, one of which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2007.

Most military books are by vets, or guys observing, but Operation Homecoming is real. It's uncut. It's better than any military documentary or movie I've seen or read. It's from real soldiers, in real situations, in real places, with real feelings. I have to say some stories are more exciting than others, but they all are great. It's just soldiers sharing their experiences, feeling, lives with us.
