Editorial Reviews

Review

"Team of Darkness is a thoroughly entertaining adventure novel that will appeal to both fans of that genre and readers of fantasy who like a bit of thought with their action. And, though it seems all the dilemmas the characters face are completely resolved, there seems to be an underlying hint that there is more to come. One can only hope." -- Elizabeth K Burton, The Blue Iris Journal

"Tony Ruggiero served 23 years in the US Navy, and he has made excellent use of his experiences in this book. The characters and organization in this novel are entertaining, believable and very consistent. Add to this a very easy to read writing style and there's a lot to recommend in this novel. I'm not the most frequent horror reader as I often find there can be too much of a reliance on gore to shock the reader, but that is not the case here. This is simply a well-constructed, tightly plotted, fun to read novel." -- Steve Mazey, The Eternal Night Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Fiction Web Site

"Believe in vampires? Creatures of the night? They can suck the life out of their victims and bring terror in the wake of their attacks. Once you've read Tony Ruggiero's newest horror thriller, TEAM OF DARKNESS, you will. Ruggiero brings us on a hyper-coaster ride using his 23 years in the US Navy, to write a hypnotic plot about a nest of vampires used by a United States Navy general to fight the War on Drugs. So wait until dusk, and under the cover of night, TEAM OF DARKNESS will mesmerize you with its realism and fluid writing style. And maybe, just maybe make you wish they come to your city." -- Michael L. Thal, Scribes World Reviews

"I am a fan of vampire stories and I really enjoyed this radically different approach to vampires and to vampire stories. Tony Ruggiero has managed to create chillingly inhuman vampires and yet despite of that you end up rooting for them as they battle against the cold inhumanity of the military. He raises some interesting questions of morality, both among the vampires and the military that would use them." -- Linda Suzane, Midnightblood.com

"Tony Ruggiero delivers an entertaining and surprisingly compelling novel. I was especially impressed with his handling of military details. He gives the reader enough information without overdoing the technicalities. Team of Darkness has that cool Commando type feel (think Wolf's Hour on a smaller scale) to it. I found myself really wanting to find out what happens in the next chapter. Ruggiero writes with a skilled seamless style that makes Team of Darkness a real find." -- Paukla Sahraoul, Horror World Review

From the Publisher

Tony Ruggiero's "revamped" Team of Darkness story: During the peacekeeping operations in the Kosovo region of the Balkans, a group of vampires are discovered by the American forces. The report of the discovery attracts the interest of the commander of the elite and highly secretive organization; the United States Special Operations Command, who sends in his own personnel to investigate. When the General learns that the creatures actually exist, his team, led by Navy Commander John Reese, devises a method of capture and brings the vampires back to the United States. Once the creature's abilities have been proven and can be controlled, the General sets his own personal and secret plan of revenge in motion against the large drug cartels of South America by sending in his special ops team to kill, codename: Team of Darkness.

More About the Author

Tony Ruggiero retired from the United States Navy in 2001 after twenty-three years of service. While continuing to write, Tony teaches at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His published novels include:

Operation Immortal Servitude: Book I of the Declassified Files of the Team of Darkness: The US military has developed a new weapon to be added to its arsenal--the creatures known as vampires. Tony uses his Naval experience to write this dark fantasy thriller about a group of vampires that are discovered in Kosovo, captured and brought back to the United States to be used by the Navy SEALs as an elite hit squad. Ground breaking and fast paced, the novel is a characteristic mixture of the vampire lore of Anne Rice and the clandestine secrets of the military found in Tom Clancy novels.

Operation Save the Innocent: Book II of the Declassified files of the Team of Darkness: General Stone, the commander of the Special Operations forces is murdered. His assassin is a vampire who has been controlled and used by a U.S. secret government organization to murder selected targets since her arrival in the United States over sixty years ago. Meanwhile, the vampires from the Team of Darkness operation discover the existence of two young vampire girls being held captive in their own former prison and set out to free them while eluding both the military and the Agency.

Operation Face the Fear: Book III of the Declassified Files of the Team of Darkness: As John Reese attempts to find the missing vampire girls, he uncovers information that leads him to join forces the remaining vampires from the Team of Darkness. This collaboration will likely result in his own death if discovered by the secret government agency that seeks to use the vampires for their own idealistic goals of reshaping the world. However finding the vampires yet leads to another discovery--one very close to the heart of John Reese and makes him have to face his own fear that he has been hiding from.

Alien Deception: Something to keep in mind with the upcoming presidential election: Nothing is as it appears???nothing. Your whole life you think you understand who and what you are and then one day you learn that it is all a lie. So what do you do? You have lunch with the leading candidate for President of the United States???you and your alien friends.

Alien Revelation: The exciting conclusion to Alien Deception. Death has many meanings. For some it is an end, while for others it is a beginning. Yet, for one human/alien hybrid, it is a way to have one final chance to try and save his home, Earth, a son he has never seen, and find an enemy that just won't stay dead.

I got so caught up in the story that I jumped when I heard a noise upstairs!

Team of Darkness is a wonderful combination of two genres I love; military action stories and vampire fiction.

What really drew ME in, as a non sci-fi person, was the realistic and in depth characters.

I have never enjoyed science-fiction and I have a unilateral ban on vampires, but I am astonished that I LOVE Tony Ruggiero's science-fantasy! Typically, I don't even like military works, but really, this book was enthralling. Furthermore, he brought the idea of vampires into a realistic, non-glittery, present. I don't know how to tailor this review to draw in military, sci-fi/fantasy types, but this is a really great book. Also, I'd like to say that I listened to it on audiobook and was hard pressed to turn it off. What really drew ME in, as a non sci-fi person, was the realistic and in depth characters. I urge anyone out there to buy the book, especially the audiobook, and I promise you will be glad you did.

I enjoyed the previous version (Team of Darkness) but thought there might be something more to the story. I found out that I was right after the author told me this version was coming out.

There's something to the saying that you shouldn't read this after dark. I am not normally a fan of military science fiction, but this had me carrying it around while doing other things. I got so caught up in the story that I jumped when I heard a noise upstairs!

Tony does an exceptional job merging two popular subject matters without making the other more important than the other. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I really enjoyed this book. I expected a lot of military details that would eventually bore me, but I was pleasantly surprised. It kept my attention so much that I couldn't put it down once I started it. It doesn't bog you down with too much military jargon and it makes you believe that vampires really exist. Oh, wait. They do. This is a great book and I recommend it to everyone. I will be reading more of this author. And others should too.

I bought this book on recommendation from a co-worker who took a class Mr. Ruggiero was teaching, and I wasnt disappointed.
The story follows a group of vampires that are discovered and captured then blackmailed by a general in the US Army to carry out covert operations because of their superhuman abilities.
Its a fast paced read, and getting ready to start the second novel in the series

This was a refreshing book to read! I enjoyed reading a vampire book that was actually about the vampires and not about the sex! Had a hard time putting this book down, had enough info to understand the military aspects without boring me with an overabundance of unnecessary jargon.

Some violence, (wouldn't want to read a vampire book with none) but not graphic enough to be gory. I would recommend this to the men (and teenage boys) in my life. Look forward to future reads from Mr. Ruggeiro.

This book reads like a combination of Stoker, John Ringo, Tom Clancy and a touch of ZA Recht (may he rest in peace) - all the suspense and classic "horror" of Stoker, all the military intrigue of John Ringo (read the "Paladin of Shadows" series - "Ghost," "Kildar," "Choosers of the Slain," "Unto the Breach," and "A Deeper Blue" - in that order) and all of the political intrigue of Tom Clancy (with some of his better military intrigue thrown in for good measure). As for the vampires - Anne Rice has nothing on Tony Ruggiero IMHO.

Tony has created some very real characters but I have to say that my favorites are Commander Reese and the vampire Dmitri - their interactions make the book what it is - a good, well written and fast read that you just cannot put down once you start it.
