Grade 3-6-- Title notwithstanding, this is a brief history of the U. S. space program emphasizing developments that have led to the retrieval and repair of orbiting satellites. Herda treats the subject so nontechnically that readers may have little idea of the problems encountered or how they were solved. Perhaps this is not surprising in a book with only 25 pages of text. Full-page color photos--all but one courtesy of NASA--comprise the bulk of the book, and in several places are grouped together so that readers can forget the text entirely before they come to it again. It is annoying to see approximate English measurements translated into precise metric ones, e.g., "nearly 300 feet (91.5 meters)." But while the basic information of this book may readily be found elsewhere, its unique focus and the vignettes of tense moments on Gemini 8 or the conditions survived while repairing Salyut 7 make it worth consideration as a supplemental volume. --Margaret Chatham, formerly at Smithtown Library, NY
