3.0 out of 5 stars Half decent budget shooter for the DS September 7, 2007
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Looking for a half decent distraction for your DS that isn't a puzzle game? Operation: Vietnam is a half decent shooter with a budget price for the DS that is good for what it is, while it lasts that is. Taking control of four American soldiers in the Vietnam war, you use the stylus and touch screen to switch between them and issue commands, while using the buttons to perform the more basic actions. This amounts to some brief moments of strategic action, but not a whole lot. For what it is, it's cheap fun with a number of flaws. Namely the game's steep learning curve that starts off easy enough and grows to some increasing difficulty as the game moves on, which doesn't take too long considering how short the game is. Not to mention the glaring lack of a musical soundtrack and almost zilch in the way of half decent sound effects. Even more glaring is the fact that there are no multiplayer options at all. A game like Operation: Vietnam cries out for some multiplayer fun, but sadly, there's none to be found. Considering the budget price of Operation: Vietnam, you're only getting what you pay for, which isn't a game all that bad to begin with. Your interest however will quickly go elsewhere, so proceed to Operation: Vietnam with general caution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game August 25, 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The game is a light hearted look at the Vietnam War. You are a squad stuck in enemy territory and you have to fight you way back to base. Kill VC, Rescue Villagers, etc...

Game play is awesome. Its not historically accurate - its a game. Its fun and straight forward. Simple controls.

Sound effects are awesome. The sound of the M203 grenade launcher and the death screams of VC getting hit are rewarding. Not much music. Good Jungle background sounds.

Controls. The only negative. Its hard to move dialonally. The DS doesn't have an analog stick so you have to press 2 buttons to move dialonally. Controlled shooting is hard in a massive firefight.

I love this game for all that it is. Its not Killzone, but its WAY fun. For $20.00 its a great buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game!!! September 2, 2009

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I didn't know anything about this game at first, but it sounded pretty interesting after reading the description and other reviews. I got it at a really low price from Amazon and was not disappointed one bit. The gameplay is team based strategy and managing them in various operations in Vietnam. The graphics are pretty decent and remind me of the glorious 16 bit days of the SNES/Genesis era. The game is fun from beginning to end and as you finish a level you open up bonus games, which was a nice suprise. I'm very glad that I got this game as it's introduced me to a category of gaming that I've never played before which is team based management. I definitely recommend getting this game for your DS collection, especially if you are into Team based management or not. It's worth a look at.
