3.0 out of 5 stars Ecumenism
That is the biggest problem with this book. The fact that cults and Catholicism are included as Christian should be disturbing to any bible believing Christian. It is too bad the author felt compelled to sell out the Gospel in order to sell books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Organized, Well-structured, July 12, 2000
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
"Operation World" is a solid educational and prayer tool for Christians concerned about world evangelism and world welfare.

Each day of the year gets a country (or portion of a country in a few cases).

Johnstone describes the land geographically, but then describes the people groups, their percentages of the whole population, political circumstances, etc. He also gives demographics regarding denominations and religions.

Important to mention is how "OW" is sure to not let one agency or denomination overwhelm it. It isn't a 'pentecostal' or 'conservative' book, but Johnstone informs the reader in a balanced way how the Conservative Baptists and the Assembly of God, and all the rest are fulfulling the Great Commission.

With the context of each country laid out, he lists matters of prayer. What mission agencies are doing what, which people groups are seeing spiritual growth (and how they could grow more), where there is in-fighting among agencies or cultures, and what can yet be done.

It sounds methodical, and it is, but Johnstone simply is helping the reader understand the complexities of each country.

Use it to prayer through a country in a prayer group, or as a teaching tool for Sunday School or CCD.

I recommend this book fully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the Big Picture of the World and Evangelical Missions, November 7, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This volume is a must for anyone truly concerned about World Missions. Dedicated laymen, pastors, and others will find this a valuable resource. It is written from the evangelical perspective.

Most nations are summarized in one to three pages. Summaries include a map, description of area, peoples and people groups, literacy, capital city, economy, politics, and, of great interest to Christians, religious demagraphics. Christians are separated into sub-categories as well (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant--which is further sub-divided into evangelical and charistmatic).

Current history, special needs/situations, and current ministry approaches form yet another category. Each article provides a list of needs and prayer requests. The countries are also co-ordinated with a date atop the page for those who wish to pray for a nation a day.

As a pastor, I find this my most important missions resource. It is clearly number 1 for missions demagraphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great world prayer devotional guide, August 9, 2001
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
I love how this prayer book is set up. Each calendar day of the year, you pray for the physical and spiritual needs of each country. The countries are listed in alphavetical order. Some of the larger countries get more than one day allocated to them for prayer because of the greater number of people and needs. The USA gets 5 days in November and Indonesia gets 7 days in June, for example.

The author has done a fantastic job at researching what the needs are in each country, and it makes prayer for the nations a more personalized experience. Before this book came out, I would just say, "God, bless America. Bless China." Well, now with this book, I can pray more precisely. I am grateful to Patrick Johnstone for putting together a wonderfully helpful guide for praying for the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most informative, motivating book on world prayer., May 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
This book is packed with information covering history from a political, economic, and religious standpoint allowing you to pray in context for each country. There are specific requests. The former head of World Vision said, "Let my heart break for the things that break God's heart." I have been using this book for the last 14 years and it has helped me to see the world from His perspective and break like His heart breaks! An essential for any believer serious about world prayer! It is an incredible resource for using with your children in opening eyes to the needs of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful in Becoming a World Christian, March 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
The best thing about this book is the way it cultivates concern and compassion in our hearts for all of the world. It is organized by what to pray for daily, and through the book it lists all parts of the world and their prayer concerns and also outlines some of the ways God has already been moving in that region--so it gives your heart a chance, through prayer, to mourn with those who mourn, rejoice with those who rejoice, and to bear one another's burdens. It is far too easy, especially if you live in an affluent country, to forget the struggles our Christian sisters and brothers are facing all over the world. This book can be instrumental in having our hearts be concerned for those things that concern the heart of God. It will definitely reshape your devotional life, perspective on Christian unity, and belief in the efficacy of prayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely in my Top Five Favorite Books, January 14, 2001
By
Fayelle Ward (Jacksonville, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
This book is totally great for the busy student/worker/parent! Not only is it concise and easy to read, it offers day by day organized information on countries around the world. It's hard sometimes in prayer times to remember the rest of the world, and what a huge world this is! This book gives the opportunity to pray one country at a time for SPECIFIC needs. It even chooses a country for you on a specific date. Not overwhelming, not fancy jargon. You open it up - January 14th - The Church in Asia. A specific prayer need and it gives spectacular statistics, graphs and you can pick it up no matter when the last time you used it was. It gives information on all religions and practices going on in a specific place at a specific time. Definite must-have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pray! - and Learn Geography Too!, October 7, 2006
By
George A. Goolde (Orange City, FL, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Operation World has long been recognized as THE essential work on missionary demographics, with data and daily prayer requests for each country of the world. But in these days when Americans rank so poorly in our knowledge of world geography it also has another use. This book can be used by individuals, classes, and schools to study world geography, country by country. The comparative data are very helpful: Which countries are the richest and which are the poorest? Which are the most densly populated and which are the most sparsely populated? On the ever-changing African continent what are the existing countries today? Operation World tells us. Families can learn at home about their world in an educatinally interesting and a spiritually beneficial way.

I use this in my devotions, with my family, and in my junior high classroom. It's a great tool. Don't leave home without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting God's Heart for the World, June 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Operation World (Paperback)
Send your heart around the world every day as you read about and pray for the nations of the world. What a way to speed the result of the prophecy... "The will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." This is a great first step to becoming a global Christian.
