Book Description

Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, the first volume in Springer's new Operative Dictations Made Simple Series, is intended to teach residents the principles of succinct and precise operative dictations for a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Designed as a portable resource, the book provides typical dictations to guide the resident. Comprised of 155 procedures, this volume covers the alimentary tract, breast, lymph nodes, and head and neck, as well as vascular surgery, including aneurysmal disease and endovascular procedures. This volume provides templates for both minimally invasive and open approaches. As it is often difficult for the surgical resident to filter what should be included in the operative report, this book provides an authoritative guide for operative dictations while remaining flexible enough to accomodate variations in the surgical procedures performed. Written by the experienced team of a surgical department chair and a program director, the book will guide the reader step-by-step through successful dictations. The book can also serve as a quick review of the essential steps of various surgical procedures. Clearly, a must- have for every surgical resident. In addition, Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery: Operative Dictations Made Simple makes a perfect companion volume to Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery, Third Edition, edited by Carol Scott-Conner, M.D., Ph.D. The procedures in both books are presented in the same order so the resident can easily use both resources together.

More About the Author

I graduated from New York University College of Medicine in 1976 and completed my surgical residency there in 1981. I was one of the last physicians to train in the "old" Bellevue Hospital. At that time, very few women entered general surgery. I have spent my life in academic surgery, operating and teaching others the science and art of surgery. When I was appointed Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa in 1995, I was the second woman in the history of American Surgery to attain such a position. My nine textbooks all share the goal of teaching surgery in clear, lucid language. My most recent book, A Few Small Moments, is a collection of short stories. I live in Iowa City with my husband.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must have for a surgical resident., January 2, 2006
This review is from: Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery: Operative Dictations Made Simple (Paperback)
This book is very well written and has almost every operation that I could possibly perform as a surgical resident. It's also very brief and to the point. It was a great review of the operation right before going into the OR. Also, I have it downloaded onto my palm so searching for operations is easy and fast. I would highly recommend this product, especially for the general surgery intern.

4.0 out of 5 stars great asset, December 16, 2011

This review is from: Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery: Operative Dictations Made Simple (Paperback)
This is absolutely one of the must-haves for any surgery resident. So helpful for an intern just getting started, and I imagine will also be helpful once I get to more complicated procedures. Helps to read it before, not just after, a case to outline all the important steps, etc. Highly recommend. Do note, though, that not all types of cases are in here, particularly some of the smaller ones. Also, (need I say this?) pay attention to the differences in technique between what's written in here and what you actually do with your attending. Everyone has their own style, dictate it appropriately.
