5.0 out of 5 stars Snook at his best, November 14, 2009
The author, I. Snook Jr., wrote an earlier short book on how hospitals work, and that book went through a few editions. This book covers many of the best topics covered in that short introductory book and in addition offers information about actual hospital administrator positions.

Hospital administration is an excellent area in which to establish a career, whether one is able to target this area as a college student or whether one is a career-changer but has relevant experience to offer and is able to make a successful career transition. The expectation is that a hospital administrator, once fairly well-established, will not have to completely change careers again - ever. I think this is a great and promising area to get into, and it sure would be wonderful to not have to start all over again later in life.

I have personally made at least one major career transition in my life when I went back to school after having been established in a completely different career, got a master's degree in accounting and became a CPA. My successful career transition took altogether some years before I was able to become well-established and personally confident. It is a very difficult thing to do.

The final chapter of this book is short like all the chapters. This is consistent with Snook's approach to writing as we've seen from his previous books. Mainly, the final chapter is filled with basic advice about resume preparation and job search advice. Certainly one would do well to get a couple books that are entirely devoted to that subject. The value of this book is that is gives a summary of the areas where one can get started in hospital administration, a field that should promise decent employment prospects for the remainder of one's working life. Certainly, even if sweeping changes are made to healthcare, hospital administration will remain very important. All the diverse healthcare systems around the world require professional hospital administrators.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit bare bones, October 14, 2011

As a student and young professional, completely new to the Health Care Administration profession, I had no prior knowledge of the various health care institutions and how they are organized. This book offered good, basic, easy to understand, information on the health care institutions in U.S. It serves as a good starting point. I read this book in one sitting as it is a small book with only a bit over 100 pages long.

I wish it had more information on the various positions you can have as a health care administrator. The book addresses mainly the big-shot jobs like CEOs, VPs, and director positions, with only about a paragraph about each to include job description and salary information. It would have been nice if it also talked about lower management, or assistant manager in various departments.

you can find all of the information in this book on the bls.gov website. the author needs to update with the following

-examples of work you would do in this field (give us some photos of that work)
-interviews with students, faculty, directors, analysts etc... (good bad and ugly)
-more background on the healthcare economy
-additional skills for success and how to get those
-how the role of healthcare administrators has changed, and where snook and others see it going
-more on healthcare IT and an administrators various interaction and role

this is a book meant for a counselors office for people who are inept to use google or bls.gov in my opinion. i was really disappointed. Snooks other book about hospitals is really good though.
