1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time or money, June 3, 2000
By A Customer
I am a med student who was looking for specific information about specialties and this book was worthless. It was extremely short and about 1/3 of its pages were comprised of a list of medical schools. The only possible use for this book is for a middle or high school student who lacks even the most rudimentary knowledge about medial education and practice.

ABSTRACT
OPPORTUNITIES IN PHYSICIAN CAREERS
WRITTEN BY JAN SUGAR-WEBB, M.A
VGM CAREER HORIZIONS

The book Opportunities in Physician Careers covers everywhere from the history of medicine to what schooling is needed to become a physician.
The first chapter talks about the history of medicine. She talks about where medicine first started with the ancient Egyptians, and the influence of Greek medicine. She also talks about the how the Renaissance and the seventeenth century influenced medicine. The book also goes into detail about the start of prevention, and the rise of modern medicine. At the end of this chapter the book touches on the future of medicine.
The book also talks about the training needed to get into medical school and what to expect before, during and after medical school. After medical school you will go into residency training, which includes residents, interns, and fellows. It into detail about where you would do residency, hours worked, and pay.

Then for rest of the book it talks about specialties you can get into. Specifically Family Practice and General Internal Medicine Surgery and Surgical Specialties. It also talks about Medical Specialists such as cardiovascular medicine, Hematology and many others. The book also talks about other specialists you can be, for example pediatrics, gynecology, anesthesiology and many others.
At the end of the book it talks about the future of medicine. It focuses on the job outlook, alternative medicine, and patients' rights.
I think that this book is a good book to look into the many different aspects of medicine. The author goes into detail about what to excect when getting into different fields of medicine. She also talks about the history anf future of medicine. Over all I think this is a very informative book.
