1.0 out of 5 stars Stick with Coconuts
Let me begin by saying this book sucked. It sucked so hard, I'm suprised black holes aren't springing up near it. I only finished this book because I bought it and thought it would be wrong of me not to. (I only actually "read" about half of it, the rest I read on skim mode)

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read but not up to author's usual standard, June 12, 2003
This review is from: Opposites Attract (Mass Market Paperback)
New Orleans socialite Jonni Landry DeVries wonders why she did it. It was obviously a moment of lunacy that made her open her mansion to a Hollywood film crew. Jonni has spent the past year in mourning, but not for her deceased philandering spouse. Instead she grieves what he did to her once vibrant personality so that Jonni has not recently helped in the care of their five-year-old child, let alone nurturing her daughter.

The tabloids love following Cameron Scott, the star of the children's film being made on location in Jonni's home. Known for his womanizing ways, Cameron and Jonni are attracted to one another. However, she refuses to get involved with another bad boy while all he wants is the role of a lifetime starring with her.

Though quite engaging at times due mostly to the hero, readers will be hard pressed to find any empathy towards the lead female protagonist. Not only is Jonni wallowing, but also ignoring her child leaves her open to animosity as a worthless rich bi*ch. Still, Scott is a delightful character and somewhat carries the tale with some help by the daughter of his beloved. He is a hunk who somehow manages to break through Jonni's barrier of self-pity.

Let me begin by saying this book sucked. It sucked so hard, I'm suprised black holes aren't springing up near it. I only finished this book because I bought it and thought it would be wrong of me not to. (I only actually "read" about half of it, the rest I read on skim mode)

The writing was uninspired and I didn't understand the heroine. At all. She was apparently some wealthy New Orleans socialite who always dreamt of being a wife and mother. But she didn't actually take care of her child. Or clean her house. Or have sex with her husband (he was having an affair with a fellow lawyer and was tragically killed in a car accident.) I have no idea WHAT this woman did all day. Except maybe eat icecream?

There were several scenes that annoyed me, but I think the worse was when Jonnie (Her name was Jonquil, which PLEASE.) decided she was tired of her late husband's study being dark so she pulls out a chair and rips down the drapes. Where she leaves them piled on the floor until he maid comes into the room to see what's going on. Jonnie promptly tells the maid to dispose of the drapes. Does Jonnie have something pressing to do? Could she not clean up the mess she made? After that; I just sort of hated her and hoped she was hit by a bus.

I didn't much care for the hero, Cameron, either. He seemed very one dimensional and like every other romance novel bad boy. He was in trouble as a juvenile, yet he was really tender and sensative. I will say that through his actions I had a better feel for his compassion and concern for others. So, I guess that's a plus.

With Jonnie, I felt like the reader was always being told what to think of her. You should think Jonnie is compassionate because she hired a nanny David (the dead husband) wouldn't have given her a chance. You should think Jonnie wants to take care of her child because she says so (even though Jonnie leaves her daughter alone or with the nanny most of the to run off and be with Cameron.)

I never understood the title of the book either. I still can't figure out what is opposite about the characters, and their attraction was tepid at best. I don't recommend this book, unless you're stranded on an island alone and might go crazy with the boredom. But even then, I would try coconut sculpture first.

Okay. I almost care about what happens in this book but the characters dialogue is KILLING me. I'm at page 175 and I'm just done! The writer has killed my interest in finishing this novel. Cliche, cliche, cliche. Who edited this thing? These characters have NO depth thru dialogue or action. It does have a premise of some small amount of interest. The idea of filming in New Orleans in that class structure SHOULD be interesting but the dialogue! These characters don't have an original line ANYWHERE. Also the dynamic between characters is not explained or well supported. The transitions throught the scenes are choppy and downright confusing at times, not cute and edgy (as I think she was trying for). Sorry to say this book is not worth the money. Maybe one of her later novels is a better read. If not, then being a "USA Today Bestselling Author" is not a sign of good work anymore!

3.0 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars; pretty predictable, May 17, 2007
By
This review is from: Opposites Attract (Mass Market Paperback)
It's been a year since her husband died, leaving Jonni to care for their child (with a staff or course) while mourning the loss of her husband, who she suspects might have been involved with another woman. When her sister Daffy (they are named after flowers - Jonquil and Daffodil) suggests that she offer up her home as a location for a major movie being filmed in New Orleans, Jonni opens the doors of her antebellum mansion, only to discover that the star of the show is action star Cameron Scott. Her lack of confidence notwithstanding, Cam soon makes overtures, and wonders if it isn't time to settle down.

North's sequel to "Dear Doctor Love" featuring her daffy twin, Daffy is cute, but suffers from predictability. Some of the dialog is stilted, secondary characters are pretty stereotypical, the precocious child annoying, and Jonni's character is a little too self-pitying (it grates after awhile). About the only redeeming characteristic is the sizzling encounters, which given the lack of depth attributed to her heroine seem out of place. Lucky I got this one from the library - I rate it 2.5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant read, but not a lot of depth, October 31, 2003
This review is from: Opposites Attract (Mass Market Paperback)
A pleasant, humorous read, but not a lot of depth or emotion in the plot.

The hero, Cameron Scott, is an actor filming a children's movie in New Orleans. The heroine, Jonni DeVries, own the house where the filming is taking place. The story goes like this: the hero and heroine meet, they fall in love, they get married. That is about the extent of the plot. There is no conflict keeping the two lovers apart, no drama, no emotional zingers or villains trying to sabotage their budding romance. I kept waiting for a crisis to loom over their sweet and steady courtship, but one never appeared.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mundane Story with Unlikable Heroine, May 23, 2004
This review is from: Opposites Attract (Mass Market Paperback)
Jonquil "Jonni" DeVries is trying to deal with the blow life has handed her. Her husband died in an auto accident a year ago, leaving her and their five-year-old daughter to deal with the loss. Jonni has coped by isolating herself, overeating, and dwelling on the very real possibility her husband had been cheating on her, prior to his death. At the suggestion of her twin sister, Jonni agrees to allow a children's movie to be filmed in her New Orleans mansion.

The star of the movie is none other than Hollywood's reigning action hero heartthrob, Cameron Scott. Cameron has always thrived on life in the fast lane, taking advantage of what women all too willingly offer him. But recently he's realized just how empty his life is, and has begun thinking of a home and family of his own. When he meets Jonni, he's instantly attracted to her, even though she's nothing like the women he normally associates with. But will gun-shy Jonni believe Cameron may actually want to settle down with her?

I've been trying out books lately by authors I've not read before, and I have to say I'm not having much luck. I just couldn't get into this story, and by chapter ten or eleven I began skimming to get through the remainder of the book. I couldn't really identify with the heroine, and found her rather annoying and unlikable. She's rich, doesn't have to work for a living, and seems to stay home quite a lot. But she needs to hire a live-in nanny to care for her five-year-old child? And I really grew tired of her dwelling on her late husband's fidelity, or as it turned out, his lack thereof.

For the most part, I did like the hero, but overall I found both their characters lacking depth. And therefore, I didn't feel an emotional connection with them or their story. In fact, the story came across as being forced. I will give credit for the highly erotic love scenes, but that's not enough to redeem this book, or make it worth reading.
