Biography

The story of Biffy Clyro is as romantic as it is archetypal. Three childhood friends from Ayrshire formed a band, delivered three albums of abrasive youthful exuberance and finally cracked the big time when their fourth – 2007’s Puzzle – hit the charts at #2. By the time the promotion of their fifth album Only Revolutions had ceased, they were bona fide stars who could ... Read more in Amazon's Biffy Clyro Store

I've been on Team Biffy for quite a while and have all of their albums, including all the b-sides. I've seen them live a couple of times, and they really do live up to the hype. I love their older stuff and the newer, more slickly produced albums alike, but I think that "Opposites" has some of Biffy Clyro's best songs yet. It's wide-ranging, emotional, experimental, thoughtful, and challenging. I don't love all of the songs on the double album, but I love most of them and I like the others very much. In fact, there's not a single one I skip over when I play it, which I can't say about their other albums, as much as I love them. The double album format can sometimes drag on a bit, but in this case it opens up a broader experience - the guys clearly put a lot of thought into which songs would be included, and there's no filler here. You can listen to either CD by itself or even the individual songs by themselves, but taken all together, the songs in their intended order make a cohesive whole that's very satisfying. Be aware that the version that seems to be on sale here is NOT the full double album - six songs are missing. If you are a true fan, you'll want to have all of them, so go to the band's website or iTunes or whatever you need to do to get the deluxe version (which also has a DVD with a lot of fun behind-the-scenes footage of the recording, as well as the guys' own words about what this album means to them). The shorter 1-CD edition is still very good, especially if you are a more casual fan or if "Black Chandelier" is your introduction to the band. It delivers most of the best songs off the double album (notable for their absence are "A Girl and His Cat" and "Little Hospitals") and does not feel incomplete (unless you've heard the full version). You will not be disappointed, but if you really like the short form, do yourself a favor and go for the deluxe version too. Then catch them live next time they come through your neck of the woods. It's money well spent.

Hands down, this is their best album yet. I have been a big fan of the band since Puzzle came out, and was anxiously awaiting this album.

It tends to be a bit more straight-forward than their previous albums which jumped around quite a bit. For many bands that might be a bad thing, and could come off as "one-note", but as good as each song is on the album, it never comes across that way.

Every other one of their albums have had one or two songs I was less a fan of, but this album is a constant stream of awesome.

I don't write these reviews often, but anything I can do to spread the word about these guys in the US, the more likely they will be to tour more on this side of the pond.

Cheers, and happy listening!

Best yet from Biffy, this will allow them to break out in the States. For all those hipsters that long for the "old Biffy", time moves on, the band moves on and you should move right along with it, even if it counts against your hipster credentials.

...I picked this up as a used cd for like 3.99$. I've never heard biffy prior to like 3 weeks ago. I've seen some of their live sets on the paladia music channel and I really liked their style. Sounded like a mix between silverchair, weezer, taking back Sunday, nirvana, foo fighters, minus the bear. Their style on this record, to me, because I haven't heard their eralier stuff, reminds me a TON of seattle natives minus the bear which I really like (and I'm a swedish metal head, but love the the modern rock sound of minus and taking back Sunday). This is what modern rock NEeDs to sound like. F the hives. F the killers. F jet. And most of all F coldplay. THIS is an album that sets a really high standard for modern rock. Production value top notch. Just a good album to have in your ears during a nice night downtown. The riff that starts at 1:25 during victory over the sun is awesome :)

I had a friend tell me I was missing out having never heard these guys. He was right. Definitely one of my favorite CDs I picked up this year.

This is my first Biffy album. Like a couple songs, so I bought it. Wow, did it get better and better with each listen. You won't be disappointed. They put a lot of work into this, and the songs are phenomenal.
