Book Description

October 29, 2010
Author Sherman Smith explores the controversial topic of dating someone from another environment and background in his debut novel. Mike Daniels, a contemporary African American man, is the typical bachelor. He's a security guard in Washington, DC, and in a no-win, frustrating romance with a beautiful, sexy, but very materialistic, social climbing woman, Lisa Harris. Although Mike thinks he is in love with Lisa, she is spoiled, and her relentless criticism of his financial struggles is becoming more abrasive every day. His thoughts about leaving Lisa are hastened when he discovers that she's having an affair with her new supervisor. Mike's friend, Ron, also has problems with love, but he thinks he's doing fine as a bachelor. An attractive broker and womanizer, Ron has had his share of women, none of whom he has felt serious about; that is, until he meets Monica Williams, a beautiful young law intern, who has no problem getting any man she wants. Once Ron meets Monica, he realizes he's ready to give up his playa ways. However, as soon as Monica tires of playing and moves to Chicago for a new job, he realizes that he has let the right one get away. Mike, appreciating the value of potential true love, convinces Ron to go to Chicago to win Monica back. Mike's life is transformed when he meets Renee Jones, a young college student who lives in Southeast DC. A girl from the ghetto, Renee has never dated a man like Mike. Ironically, Mike has never dated a woman like Renee either. Mike has considered women like Renee to be hoochies, chicken heads, and hood rats. Ironically, Renee has considered men like Mike to be corny, soft, and boring. After only dating thugs and hustlers, Renee realizes that maybe she needs a change. It isn't until she pursues a relationship with Mike, the type of man that she thought she would never date, that she learns that opposites do attract.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

A native of Lynchburg,Virginia, Sherman Smith was born on November 24, 1968. After graduating from Heritage High School in 1987, he joined the US Army, where he served for three years. He has been a Correctional Officer since 1995. He also has an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice Technology. Sherman has been married since 2000, and he enjoys his spare time with his wife, Nichelle and their three children, Donnell, Derick, and Kyra. Writing is a passion that Sherman has had for many years and he plans to write more novels in the future. It was after reading books by Michael Baisden that Sherman first became inspired to write a novel. However, he procrastinated and never took the initiative to actually start writing the book. It wasn't until he met Nikki Turner, the Queen of Hip Hop Lit, that he actually became motivated to write his novel. After meeting Ms. Turner, Sherman's motivation became more intense as he told his wife, I know I can do this! Getting his completed manuscript published with traditional publishers proved to be a complicated process. After many negative experiences, Sherman decided to self-publish his novel. He hopes to become a successful writer like the two writers who inspired him the most, Michael Baisden and Nikki Turner. Sherman is also a fan of authors, Eric Jerome Dickey and Brenda Jackson. When asked about his new career as an author, he says, Writing a book is my greatest achievement. Even if I don't become a best selling author, I am still proud of the fact that I was able to write a novel, considering I had no formal training and when I started, I could barely type. Sherman hopes his success as an author will inspire others to follow their dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight lace meets other side of the tracks, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Opposites Do Attract (Paperback)
Mike Daniels is a struggling security guard with inspirations of doing more with his life. While he wants more out of life, he has hit a rut where he is very comfortable in life. Mike is trying to build a relationship with Lisa Harris a sexy, materialistic woman who is used to men taking care of her. Lisa puts a big strain on the relationship with the constant nagging at Mike to find a better Job. While Mike is telling her to be patient his time is coming, Lisa gets tired of waiting and starts an affair with her well to do supervisor. When Mike finds out about the affair, he is crushed, ends the relationship, and goes into a deep depression.

After some tribulations, things take a turn for the better and Mike is getting his life back together. He gets his dream job and starting to get over the failed relationship with Lisa. When luck would have it, he meets Renee Jones. Renee is from the hood and they both have their preconceived notion about one another. Mike feel Renee is unacceptable to date because she is from the hood and must be materialistic, a hood rat, and a chicken head with no desire to do better for herself. While Renee feels Mike must be stuck up, does not know how to have fun, corny and soft. See if the title holds true to its name, do opposites attract?

Author Sherman Smith brings a touching story with a hood twist to it. The supporting cast is essential to bringing this book together. While each could have had their own stories told. Mike's friends Ron and Dee and their love lives are very entertaining. Mike, Ron, and Dee are true friends and have a brothership that blossom in this book. Praises to the author for bringing all the elements into a complete story. I recommend this book if you looking for a love story with an urban feel to it. This book is like reading three stories in one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks can mos def be deceiving..., December 19, 2008
This review is from: Opposites Do Attract (Paperback)
Mike Daniels is a hard-working man living in Washington, D.C. with dreams that he's lost focus of. His girlfriend, Lisa Harris, found his successfulness to be sexy and in line with her dreams and aspirations of living the glamorous life. However, Mike has become too stagnate in his position in life for her. Their relationship has become a battleground as she constantly finds fault with him, and he struggles with trying to please her.

Ron, Mike's best friend, is a sexy, successful ladies man that meets Monica Williams, a gorgeous law intern. Despite his obvious infatuation with her, Ron refuses to acknowledge the depth of his love for her and has to deal with the loss of a promising relationship because of his fear of commitment.

Dee, their third cohort, is an around the way guy that loves the ladies, loves life, and is down for the get down. The three friends have a lot of fun in the midst of their own personal crises and remain true to their bond to the very end.

Opposites Do Attract is a tale of friendship, love, and relationships in different aspects. The theme describes the different levels of evolving relationships and their emotional ups and downs. The characters were all relatable and the storyline had promise. The plot was just mediocre and there was really nothing extraordinary about this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ghetto Isn't Always So Bad, October 16, 2008
This review is from: Opposites Do Attract (Paperback)
Opposites Do Attract by Sherman Smith is a crazy, fast-paced book on relationships from a male's perspective. Mr. Smith introduces us to some off-the-wall characters that will have each of us laughing, crying, and wishing them the best of luck at the end of this tale of love, trust and bad judgment.

Ron, Dee and Mike are three best friends who are well-known bachelors in Washington, DC. Mike, the more conservative of the two, is looking for love but when he is snagged by Lisa, a pompous overzealous manipulator, who is set in her ways and wants the world given to her, will he be able to handle this materialistic woman like this or will he sacrifice his own upbringing to accommodate Lisa?

Ron is a broker and not shy at all when it comes to the ladies; that is until he encounters, Monica, with her exceptional beauty, brains and potential to be a top lawyer. Ron is smitten with Ms. Monica but is she enough to make him change his womanizing ways? Monica has not always been rich; she too came up in the hood and refuses to tolerate Ron's behavior. Will Ron keep jumping from woman to woman or will love conquer all and he reunite with Monica?

Dee is a laid back ladies man who loves and appreciates all types of women, no matter the background or environment. Dealing with the conservative types as well as ghetto divas has Dee at a crossroad. Which lovely lady sends sparks down his spine?

I loved the quality and details of this story and many of us can relate to the woman's side as well as the man, when it comes to who you fall in love with. This was a great read and I recommend it to everyone who is skeptical about opposites attracting.
