Dont call it a Dimmu clone!!!!,

This review is from: De Oppresso Liber (Audio CD)
If you like atmospheric black metal, heavey use of synth. Than this is definatly a reason to jump in a pit and crack some heads. I give the five stars because they can pull it off live!!! The Dimmu refrences are endless but take a listen. I find them to be a little straight forward in their musical aproach. Give this band a few tours to mature. we will get some great albums in the future. Now whers the Vinyl!!!!!!

Nothing New, Nothing Bad,

This is fairly standard commercial black metal, having a lot in common with bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and Dragonlord. If you like that sort of thing Sothis is sure to please.
And plus, look at that cover art! IT'S FALLEN ANGELS FIGHTING/IMPALING ANGELS! You just don't get any more metal than that. The cover art is worth at least 3 stars alone.

Not a Dimmu Borgir copycat,

Yes, it does resemble Dimmu Borgir, but that shouldn't matter. There are hundreds of bands out there that sound alike. This album reminds me of Spiritual Black Dimensions, but with clearer sound quality. I'm not sure which musical elements they wanted to focus on, the guitar playing is average, nothing too technical. The keyboards/synthesizer is great for additional atmospheric elements, but not strong enough to be the featured piece. That leaves the drums..... Yes. The drums are what makes this album great. This guy is putting in mad work. He reminds me alot of Nicholas Barker on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (which happens to be the single greatest drumming performance of any metal record). Overall, the elements blend nicely for a great symphonic/black metal sound. Any Dimmu Borgir fan will enjoy this, it's the next best thing. What blows my mind is that these fellas are from America! The USA has yet to produce anything close to European symphonic/black metal. Abigail Williams could be on the list, but these guys have them beat.

Great Black Metal From U.S.A.,
By
This review is from: De Oppresso Liber (Audio CD)
Sothis is the newest addition to the symphonic black metal genre and hailing from the U.S. In the past few years, there have been quite a few disappointments in modern symphonic black metal (Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir) and have seemed to decline from that point. Many accuse sothis of being a "rip-off" of those bands but I personally don't see it. There are influences from those bands and as a result, all that I hear is a very inspiring black metal album.
I really enjoyed their demo album but "De Oppresso Liber" is much more enjoyable and interesting. You should expect a very symphonic-based album so if that's not for you, than skip this one. Although this band lacks originality, it makes up for it with many inspiring melodic black metal riffs and intense drumming. In fact, the double-bass drumming can be heard through most of the album but not in an annoying way, there are a lot of memorizing slow beats that seem to flow into the guitars along with the keyboards like in the title track. The vocals are also very intense, they are your typical raspy range but they seem to paint an evil picture in your mind as you hear the lyrics (yes the lyrics can be heard). Be patient while this band matures and we will see a lot of great albums in the future.

If you loved their demo, you'll WORSHIP their debut album,
This review is from: De Oppresso Liber (Audio CD)
This is some top of the line black metal FROM THE FROSTY REGIONS OF LA, CA (inside joke)... you guys definitely need to look up their demo (features 4 songs not included on their debut album). Sadly, they're not included.. they were raw, but full of f***ing power man. Sothis really does pull off a great live performance, and if you ever get the chance to meet them, they're just cool dudes (and chick ;]).
And for the record, Sothis has quite a unique sound.. you are deaf if you think for one second they are clones of sh#tty mainstream "black metal" bands such as Cradle.

Sothis is the newest addition to the symphonic black metal genre. I disvovered this band via Terrorizer magazine and I listened to the Fear Candy 60 Cd sampler that offered the song by Sothis tittled "Of Night And Silence". I liked that song enough to order their whole album (this album) and after hearing it all the way through, I can vouch that it is well produced and entertaining. However, it sounds rediculously close to other bands and lacks originality in a major, major way. Also, I find that alot of these black metal dudes are hard to take seriously when they look like WWF wrestlers. Anyways, I would change this to 3.5 stars but I accidently gave it fives stars and now I can't do anything but edit the review. Blah, blah, blah, if your looking for a band that is extremely simulur to Cradle Of Filth, and Dimmu Borgir than you need look no further. Sothis are pretty much Dimmu/Cradle/ clones.
