I purchased these batteries for my Canon 5d and 40d based on the postive reviews I read here on Amazon. I thought for such a cheap price, and it was told they work great, I bought three to have on backup. Not one of them holds a charge. You get what you pay for I suppose. Just thought the truth should be known.

3/30/11 update: Of the two of these I bought back in '09, one battery has become completely useless, holding fewer than fifty shots worth of charge. The chargers and second battery still work fine, though. I suppose I can't complain for the price. I still use the chargers with my OEM Canon battery, the second Opteka battery, and a few SterlingTEK batteries. Though it would have been nice if I hadn't been forced to buy the SterlingTEK batteries, I suppose for the price I really can't complain too much. Dropping the rating to three stars. One year of use on one out of two batteries isn't terrible, but it's not good either.

12/21/09 update: It's December now, and with probably 50 or 60 recharges, the batteries themselves are still going strong. The chargers are a different story. One of them has died completely. The other still works, but the charging indicator light has burnt out or been disconnected somehow from the circuit. It no longer lights up. This isn't a big deal for me because the mechanism responsible for preventing overcharging seems to still be doing its thing, and I just leave my batteries to charge overnight. Clearly though the chargers are of very poor quality, so don't think they by any means seal the deal on this product. You're buying batteries and only batteries. I want to make that abundantly clear. Reducing rating to four stars for just that reason, because if all your chargers end up going dead besides your Cannon one, you could end up with six or seven batteries and only one charger--bad mojo man.

5/12/09 original review: The battery charger gets a little warm while charging, but not enough to be a fire hazard or damage your batteries. It charges the included 2100mAh batteries in about the same time it takes my Canon charger to charge my Canon 1700mAh battery. The batteries are of good quality, too. I own four so I can swap sets with my BG-E2N battery grip. Two of these buggers in a battery grip will last literally all day for several days with conservative use of LiveView. I can't speak for product longevity, though, as I've only owned them for about a week now. They *may* (though I don't think it's likely) experience a max charge decrease with use. Time will tell. Still, at a fraction of the price of a Canon battery alone, this is WELL worth the dough, even if the battery does go bad after a year or so.

I have been trying to get in contact with the Opteka company in regards to a problem that I have had with their equipment and have played tag with them for 3 months. I think anyone who wants to buy quality products with good customer must steer clear of Opteka products.

I bought this to replace an original canon battery I bought. I was very impressed. The batteries (I have two) hold charge better and charge faster than the canon battery that came with my 50d. If you buy the battery with the charger, car charge cable and Euro outlet adapter, you will be even more impressed by the compact size and overall capability of the system. I have had no problems with these whatsoever, other than having a loose fit on the canon charger, which was an extra anyway. For $15 + shipping, these are a steal in comparison to the hyped canon prices.

I temporarily misplaced my Canon 40D battery charger so, rather than buy an overly expensive Canon replacement charger, I purchased the Opteka and considered the included battery a bonus. The charger and the battery works great!
