The Opteka CXS-800 is a budget priced follow focus system that allows you to do professional quality rack focus video from a DSLR or camcorder. It attaches to a standard 15" rail system and works great with the equally budget priced Opteka CXS-25 Universal Aluminum DSLR Camera Mount 15" Rod System. So for around $100 or less you can have a sturdy follow focus system.

The product is metal and heavy duty plastic construction and feels solidly made. The wheel turns smoothly and does not hang. You can mark the gear with a crayon or marker for follow pull settings. It comes with an all metal crank that is not shown in the picture. The crank fits inside the square opening on the knob. This provides more control over the focus pull. The rail mount has two pieces that can be adjusted to fit a short or long lens.

The gearless mechanism works good in most situations with some caveats. 1) IF the friction gear pushes too hard against the lens, it is hard to turn or creates unwanted movement in the video since it moves the lens 2) IF the friction gear does not have enough tension against the lens focus ring, it will slip. So working this follow focus requires some time to get settings right but then it works fine. A geared system is probably easier to set up but I have never used one.

This rack focus system was tested using a MFT compact digital camera and a camcorder that has a focus ring. In both situations the product worked well and performed above expectations. The crank has some slight play and does not seat snugly into the groove but fits good with some electrical tape applied to the end. The gear will sometimes slip off the lens if the screws are not tight. For these reasons this product is rated 4/5. But overall it is one of the least expensive follow focus devices available and is a good value for the money.

Having worked with numerous follow focuses of all prices, this was a decent purchase. I had a $25 amazon gift card and got this used for $29, so I only paid $4 for this follow focus. I would not spend $60 on this product because there are some flaws but for $30 it is definitely a viable option.

Build Quality
The build quality is impeccable high quality metal and aluminum. I have had for 3 weeks but it feels like it will last for years.

Design
This is where most of my issues lye. Design is a good concept in theory but this follow focus will not work unless you have a battery grip for your Canon 5d. when you finally do get the follow focus lined up correctly and start to focus, the follow focus pulls down on the lens which makes me nervous that it is putting a lot of pressure on the lens where it connects to the camera, because of that the lens move slightly when focusing, which is not a huge issue for run and gun but for high end shoots this is a liability. Im going to try a simple lens support bracket which could fix this problem and would definitely bump this review up a star (will update after I test). Other than that very fluid and precise.

Overall
I would recommend this follow focus to the filmmaker on a budget or someone who does a lot of run and gun shooting. I would not spend $60 on this but I would spend the $30 for a used one (which was in perfect condition when it arrived). Well built follow focus with some minor design flaws.

Love it. The premise works great and it's a very easy setup, adjust and take down. I use this focus almost as better angled main focus knob. Does exactly what I want it to do.

Only issue I've come across, ensure your camera/lens is securely mounted to your 15mm rod plate. Since friction is the driving properly in this design, lining up the FF with the focus ring is crucial. When aligned, there's slight push from the piece onto the lense caseing itself. No biggy, but if your camera body slides, your asking for a world of problems far more severe than being unable to focus properly.

I also have a proper geared/teeth/clamp follow focus. I much prefer that rig on my tripod mounted camera (Canon XL2 w/ full manual 16x lens). I use the Opteka solely with my Alpha dslr rig (both photo & video)

The idea is great, the actual product is not. This does nothing for me. I tried using it on the Opteka shoulder mount (which is a great buy!) but the follow focus either doesn't reach the lens to adjust the focus or it does and needs very high amounts of pressure, which doesn't make me feel safe using it with expensive lenses. Overal would not purchase unless you have tested the product before hand and it works with what you need it for. Build quality seems great though.
