Product Description

Style: Canon EOS | Product Packaging: Retail

The Opteka .35x Ultra Wide Angle Fisheye Lens with detachable macro for Canon gives you a dramatic 180 degree view with a greatly exaggerated perspective when used with a digital SLR camera and it's existing lens. For example, the Opteka .35x will convert a 18-55mm lens into a 6.3-19.2mm fisheye. A powerful circular image is produced, floating within the frame. This fisheye lens is designed so it allows the lens to work with the camera's autofocus, auto exposure, auto metering and auto white balance functions. Hybrid aspherical lenses and multi-layer coating help you to produce sharply defined images with a minimum of flare and ghosting. The lens focuses as close as 1' (0.3m) from the lens.

Now you can take close-up shots like you never took before with the detachable 10x macro lens. Enables you to get much closer than the minimum focus of the standard camera lens - as close as 3 inches from the subject. Originally designed for dentists and medical use, the Opteka macro lens is now available to the public. Multi-coated HD elements provide unbelievable detail.

Nothing changes the way you see the world like High Definition², and no company does High Definition² like Opteka. In the professional setting, Opteka's glass optics define High Definition. Change the way you view the world. Enjoy outstanding detail, enjoy enhanced clarity, enjoy Opteka.

I purchased this lens to use with my Canon A590IS camera in order to take full-frame photos of thumbnail-sized mineral specimens. My choice was between the Canon 250D macro lens and this Opteka macro lens. Considering that the price of this Opteka lens was one-third that of the equivalent Canon lens, I wondered about the Opteka lens quality; but ultimately decided to take a $30 gamble and purchased the lens. In short, this was a good purchase.

This Opteka lens comes with front and back friction-fit lens caps and an adaptor that allows the lens to be mounted on the camera (note for the Canon lens, the adaptor has to be purchased separately). To use the macro lens on the A590 camera, you first remove a decorative metal ring (a bezel) from around the camera's built-in lens. The Opteka adaptor is clicked into place on the camera where the bezel was removed by means of a twist and click bayonet mount. The Opteka macro lens is then screwed onto the front of the adaptor. You then change the camera's "converter" setting to "250D" and you are all set to take close-up photos. The front of the Opteka lens is threaded to permit the use of filters, if desired.

The Opteka adaptor ring, which sticks out a little less than two inches from the camera body, partially blocks the camera's viewfinder, flash, and autofocus sensor. This is not the fault of the lens (the Canon adaptor does this, too), but rather is due to the compact design of this consumer-grade camera. You'll want to use the LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, turn the flash off (you'll probably want to use custom lighting for close-up photography anyway), use manual rather than automatic focusing for the sharpest image, and use manual aperture settings to control depth of field.

I should start out by saying I'm not a professional photographer, nor do I know anything about lenses. I wanted to be able to take some pictures of my flowers and seedlings this year, so I purchased the lens. At first I was having some issues getting my pictures in focus. I didn't even realize my camera (A570) had a manual focus feature. Once I figured that out (went back and read the camera manual) I've been able to take some really cool pictures. It was delivered this morning, and I've already taken several hundred pictures because it's so addicting. The price is definitely worth it too.

I should mention the folks at 47th street photo included an adaptor with my lens. I didn't order one because I didn't realize I would need one. Whether they do this for every order I don't know, but you might want to check. The one they gave me is a silver aluminum Opteka one.

Based on previous reviews of this lens I decided to try it out. The first thing I noticed is that this lens has some real substance to it. It is not a cheap plastic knockoff. It is made in Japan from quality glass and precision workmanship. Mounting it to a Canon A590IS is simple if you read the manual. The close-up pictures are the bast I have ever taken. I do recommend adding a 52mm lens hood to block out ambient light. If you are in to macro photography and have a Canon A590 do yourself a favor and get this lens.

I bought this as an addition to my well-used work camera, the Canon a590IS. This attachment allows that already impressive macro mode to shoot even closer. I use this to take pictures of very tiny components or very small fractures in various products during the course of my work. This lens allows the camera to focus within millimeters of the subject. However, due to the size of the accessory in relation to the camera body, light sources other than the flash should be used for the sake of clarity.

The Opteka 10x lens is a handy dioptic lens that lets you squeeze just a little bit more magnification out of your digital camera's macro mode. I've used it to photograph flowers as well as small toy models within dioramas and, for these purposes, it's fine. The resulting image is sometimes a bit softer than the image would have been without the Opteka, but this is fine for what I use it for - I am not trying to record things with a scientist's accuracy. I find that it adds a nice tonal quality.

On the plus side, the cheap glass that Opteka uses, coupled with the softness of the image toward the edges, can help this lens lend your pictures a quickie pseudo-Holga look if you're careful about shutter speed, apeture, and focal length. Just don't leave your camera in macro mode. No, it's not a Lensbaby but it costs a lot less. On the negative side, if you think you're going to be able to record the sort of extreme macro shots of insects and plant details that you've probably admired in magazines such as National Geographic - forget it! This is a diopter, not a dedicated macro. Consider it a magnifying glass rather than a replacement for your actual lens.

I'm giving this lens 4 stars based on the price point and the intended market. I enjoy using it, but I am not a pro photographer. My use of the lens is mostly limited to photographing Christmas Village-type displays and wildflowers. This can be a fun lens for a hobbyist, and you can take some very impressionistic shots with it, but this is not a top-of-the-line lens.
