5.0 out of 5 stars Great
Simple and inexpensive, but does amazing things (rapid fire flashes for continuous exposures). Gives perfect exposures in auto mode. A sufficiently long cable allows it's use off the camera for side lighting of macro subjects.

I bought this not expecting too much but guessed it would be of some use. The first day I
used it I was happy but the second day after taking 25-30 shots I heard a BIG POP, then it
was dead. I called 47th Street and they agreed to credit me. Today I connected my
Canon 420 flash to the same camera and sadly found my Hot Shoe is blown out. The Opteak
sent a surge when the capacitor jumped into my $800 Canon Rebel. I knew I was taking a chance
buying a cheap Macro Ring Flash but NEVER could have guessed this might happen. I'm just
sorry no one reported such a problem in the reviews I read, I'm doing this as a warning only
to pass on my very sad experience with this product, spend the extra for the Sigma EM-140DG.

This review is from: Opteka RL-500 eTTL AF Macro Ring Flash for Canon EOS 40D, 30D, 20D, 5D, and Digital Rebel XT, XTi, & XSi (Electronics)
I needed a flash ring to do some close-up photography and borrowed a friends Opteka RL-500. I have a Canon XTi and wanted to check compatibility before I fired it up. I work with electronics and wanted to see what voltage ended up on the shoe when the unit was fired. I measured 170V. The maximum voltage a Canon hot shoe should have applied to it is 6V. Use this unit and you could blow your hot shoe. I didn't risk it and went with a Canon flash ring (and it has worked perfectly!).

1.0 out of 5 stars BUY ORIGINAL CANON, DON'T BUY OPTEKA, January 25, 2008
This review is from: Opteka RL-500 eTTL AF Macro Ring Flash for Canon EOS 40D, 30D, 20D, 5D, and Digital Rebel XT, XTi, & XSi (Electronics)
For a flash manufactured in Japan, I would have expected perfection from the Japanese. I got the flash, took a few pictures and was quite happy, but after the 10th photograph the flash stopped working. What a complete waste of money!!! I cannot even use it as a coffee coaster. Next time, buy CANON. Costs more for sure, but it is not a waste of money! As for buying anything else for Opteka, NOT A HOPE IN HELL!

I have had my ringflash now for a year and it is still working fine. The stroboscope feature is kind of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good ring flash for less, April 8, 2008
This review is from: Opteka RL-500 eTTL AF Macro Ring Flash for Canon EOS 40D, 30D, 20D, 5D, and Digital Rebel XT, XTi, & XSi (Electronics)
This flash works great. I have been using it for months now and I bought another one for a friend. I'm using this flash with Canon Rebel XT and the results I'm getting are excellent. The price is a third of a Sigma flash and a forth or fifth of a Canon. My wife owns the Canon ring flash and for the application I use the flash for, I don't see a difference between the two. As far as the problems that the other reviewers had, I hope the majority of the buyers are doing better.
