5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Normal to Telephoto Hood
I purchased this hood for use with a DX-format Nikon 18-55mm VR lens (27-82mm film equivalent) to accommodate it's relatively large magnification range. The hood threads on easily, and still provides threads on the front end for attaching more filters if you choose to keep the hood on all the time. The hood is easily adjustable into 3 positions, which is a nice feature...

1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality rubber
I used this hood for less than a year before the rubber cracked at the seams and fell apart.
Inexpensive to replace, but poor longevity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Normal to Telephoto Hood, April 27, 2009
This review is from: Opteka 52mm Screw-in Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood / Shade (Electronics)
I purchased this hood for use with a DX-format Nikon 18-55mm VR lens (27-82mm film equivalent) to accommodate it's relatively large magnification range. The hood threads on easily, and still provides threads on the front end for attaching more filters if you choose to keep the hood on all the time. The hood is easily adjustable into 3 positions, which is a nice feature. I found that when the hood is pulled all the way back and I have another filter attached, I see some vignetting on the wide end (f < ~30mm). If I remove the filter, it's all good. So if you're a "no protective filter" type, this is a moot point. But, if you're accustomed to having a protective filter in place, you'll need to remove it to avoid vignetting for wide-angle shots with this hood. For normal to telephoto lengths, this hood is great, and should be no problem with additional filters in place - you should always be able to adjust the hood length to accommodate.

This hood lens works great. it fits perfectly into my canon 50mm f1.8 lens and also w/ a filter on! :) It's rubber so you're able to push in the hood so it makes room to place back into your camera bag. I recommend this product and plan to order thru this co. again.

The Opteka screw-in hood, works. That's the short of it. If you're looking for a cheap, collapsible hood, this will suit most people fine. However, if you are shooting wide angle (such as with an 18-55mm lens), you will have the hood visible on the lower half of your range. At ~18-20mm, even with the hood in the "collapsed" position, some slight vignetting in the corners was apparent. One nice feature that I do find helpful is being able to attach filters before and/or after the hood.

PROS:
+ As a hood, it works fine.
+ Screw-in feature is appreciated
+ Good price point

CONS:
- Visible in wide-angle shots, even when collapsed out of view

Works, not really much more to tell you. Nicely protects from dust or any problems - like a hood should do, plus fast to be packed (normal hood you have to twist and unlock from the bayonet or have enough space in your bag...).

Using it on D300 (1,5 crop factor - DX sensor) i didnt notice any vignetting. You can use you lens cap without any problems or filters as well. Even you can screw you UV filter on your lens and then when you want/need you screw just the hood on, Then you can even add the C-PL... :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Hood, Minimal Problems, February 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Opteka 52mm Screw-in Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood / Shade (Electronics)
This lens hood is really pretty great, although I have a few little issues with it. Firstly, I guess that I didn't read thoroughly enough about the product, because I was anticipated a plastic hood. However, I was more happy with the rubber than I would have guessed, and it really works well. I dislike how the color of the hood is a slightly lighter black than the camera/lens is, but that shouldn't bother too many people. The construction is very good, the ring that screws onto the lens works flawlessly and is strong. The only thing that really bugs me, is that when I use this on my 50mm f1.8 lens, I have to have the hood extended at least partially, because when it is fully collapsed it covers up the manual focus ring. The circular shape of the hood can become a bit bent out of place after my camera has been in the case for a while, but it soon regains it's original form.
These negatives are truly minimal compared to the overall product, which really does work well and look cool, especially when looking directly into the lens. I would recommend it.

This hood was inexpensive. The "screw in feature" really makes go on and aff very easy. Material is more than adequate.

You have an enemy. His name is FLARE. The Opteka rubber lens hood (I got the 52mm size for my Nikkor 50mm prime lens) will reduce flare (that messy, overall lightening of the image when a direct light source strikes the lens elements directly - the reason why a simple mantra "have the sun over your shoulder" was what amateur photographers followed for many generations until the present when "ignorance is bliss" is the new mantra). Hey! Photoshop will will fix it. I like image processing software, too, but it is much preferable not to have technical problems that take time to correct.

This product not only reduces flare (unless, of course, if you are shooting directly into a light source), but it will also add some protection from precipitation, impact, and dust. If you have a really good quality lens, you don't want to place inferior glass in front of it, such as typical consumer lens filters. The best image results from what the lens alone sees. Filters cause some flare and other problems themselves. Go filter-free. Use a lens hood.

One caveat about them is that with some on-camera flash, a long lens or a hood will cause a shadow in the image on the bottom edge because the flash is not high enough. Other than that, there is no good reason not to own and use one of these for each lens that doesn't have one already (many lenses arrive with dedicated hoods that bayonet in place). Well, another caveat: these screw on the lens threads - less quick to remove. But the rubber part folds back over the base to save space in the camera bag. This is a cheap way to improve your shots and protect your camera somewhat, as well.

The hood fit on quickly and had no problems yet. With the hood on it fits in the camera bag with no problem. The price was right too.
